Keep in mind there are many different routes you can take to get to the vernal pool trail, but according to the map the most direct routes are the 2.4 mi out and back from the vernal pool trailhead from the parking lot on Via Volcano, or the 4.8 mi out and back using coyote to trans preserve from the hidden valley trailhead (I started here). The surrounding trails on the preserve allow for choosing longer/shorter routes depending on what you're in the mood for. This side of the preserve, dogs/bikes/horses are not allowed (however it was clear there were definitely many dogs brought on the trail before because unfortunately there was a lot of poo left behind). Also note day use fee. Trail was super muddy and a bit slippery in spots today due to rain this weekend. Loved the boardwalk at the verbal pools, although it was dry (despite rain). So many crickets today, made for great background noise for most of the hike! Maps/parking available at trail head, port a potty available at the visitors center.

This was an added trail we did along with the Santa Rosa to monument hill. Went on October, off season. Great weather but no water.

It's was a great hike but got really hot early. I started at 9am and it was probably already 80*. By the time I ended the hike it was over 100* and the last half was really hard to get through.
But it was very beautiful. At the start of the trail to one side was burned due to controlled fires and there were hundreds of conical spider dens.

Great trail with awesome views for an easy hike. Would give it 5 stars if it was free. But does cost $4 daily fee for adults, but annual pass can be purchased.

**this trail has a use fee**
$3 for under 13 years, $4 for adults

This was a great trail, lots of variety in type of trail. If you go all the way out to the Adobes from the trail head it's about 3.75 miles round trip. There are some steep parts so wear good sneakers but it's beautiful, even when the pools are dried up!

Beyond impressed with this trail. From the diversity of landscape to the spectacular views throughout. Great learning opportunities for families and yet enough trail that if you want to feel one with the landscape you can easily get an expanse of trail to yourself. $4 entrance fee for adults/$3 children. Great place for a picnic at the adobe houses. Bring plenty of water so you can go as long as you want!

Nice, easy hike. Beautiful scenery.

Great trail to get an hour workout in. This is NOT handicap or stroller accessible unless you literally just walk to the vernal pools and back to the car. If you decide to take the loop, there are many hills and huge rocks you need to climb over.

Fun, easy trail. We brought the whole family. We went after a few weeks of rain so Part of the trail leading to the Adobes were very muddy and slippery. Difficult for some of the kids. But a great hike none the less.

Again we had a great time ...

This would have been a good short hike for an afternoon. I had to settle for a few photos from outside the fence line as I din not have the $4.00 day use fee.

Magnificent vistas extending to the snowcapped peaks of the Coastal ranges frame the vernal pools here at the Santa Rosa plateau. This is an easy hike for the whole family and leads to the only natural basalt pools (catchment basins) in Southern California. Today the pools are full of water thanks to the recent El Nino rains. Add a deep blue sky filled with cirrus clouds with an incoming storm far off in the distance and you couldn't ask for a better day to visit these natural wonders.

Very easy 1.4 mile. There was plenty of snow cover that made for a picture perfect day. The Pools were frozen over so didn't get to see anything in the water. Everyone was very friendly. Will definitely go back!

Nice easy trail for kids, to make it a little harder combine it and go to the old adobes. We took five kids 4-15 and they all enjoyed it. No water but that wasn't a surprise. We did see a deer, woodpecker, and snake (gopher).

Very easy and clean trail. Had my two children (7 and 5) and they had no trouble on this trail. Easy to find and accessible. The pools were dried up this time of year (July). Saw some cattle, lots of ant dunes and a tarantula. We went about an hour before sun down and the views were pretty nice.
