It has been reported this trail has a temporary closure due to COVID-19. Please see the park's website for up to date information. During the winter months, portions of the John Muir Trail in Yosemite are closed. Visitors can still visit the falls, but you must return on the stairs, instead of returning on the John Muir Trail. Hike to two breath-taking waterfalls along Yosemite Valley's most popular hiking trails. If you only have time for one hike while in Yosemite look no further: the Mist Trail is the hike for you. It is no wonder why this trail is one of the most popular trails in Yosemite Valley. You will hike so close to 2 massive waterfalls that it will be very difficult to avoid the mist from the falls. The best time to hike this trail is in Spring or early Summer, while the snow runoff is high and the falls are full of water. The Mist Trail starts at Happy Isles trailhead (YARTS shuttle stop #16, and within walking distance of Curry Village and parking lot). After a brief stroll along the river, you climb a pretty steep initial accent until you reach the footbridge, which offers the first glimpse of Vernal Fall in the distance (and a water-fountain and restrooms). You will then continue up to Vernal Fall, past Emerald Pool, and alongside Nevada Fall until you reach the high-point for this hike. Then take the alternate route down along the John Muir Trail to see views of Nevada Fall and Liberty Cap in the distance before meeting back up with the Mist Trail near the footbridge. The route back is slightly longer, but offers a change of scenery and is easier on the knees. Before hopping back on the YARTS shuttle, treat yourself to some ice cream or a refreshing drink at the small stand, or head over to Curry Village for a larger variety of choices.

This trail is spectacular. We were very tired at the end but worth every bit. The views of Nevada Falls once you get onto the mist trail are breath taking. Quite a lot of traffic of the way up but much less after the top and turn onto Muir Trail. A must do if at Yosemite!

WATERFALLS and more WATERFALLS! The REDWOODS are magical and one of the most iconic hikes in the world. Steep, not for the faint of heart and If weather conditions allow it, hike HALF DOME! The cables are extreme but well worth the battle. Bring water and snacks.

Beautiful trail to hike! The steps by Vernal Falls can be slippery. Bring a light jacket as you will get sprayed as you walk up the stairs next to Vernal Falls. Go all the way up to Nevada Falls! The incline is worth it. I enjoyed watching the waterfall from all views and especially from above. This hike has a crowd. It thins out once you pass Vernal Falls.

Did this trail August 2019. It was a beautiful trail and definitely showed off Yosemite’s beauty! Pretty busy trail though so don’t do it expecting to get away from the crowds. We did see a bear at the top of Nevada falls!

Busy, but fantastic!

The mist trail was closed the day we did it but we went anyway. It wasn’t easy to find the trail because of about 18 inches of snow the day before. Surreal views though. Breathtaking every step of the way. At the top of Nevada falls, John Muir trail was closed but we went down anyway. Rough going because we were trudging through knee high snow for the first half mile. Eventually we got cover in the trees and made it easier. Once we reconnected at Clark’s point, a nice easy trip down. We jogged because it was a little chilly. Really a phenomenal trail even with the circumstances. But I wouldn’t advise someone to do the same.

One of the most beautiful trails I’ve ever hiked. Unfortunately due to conditions, the route down was closed so we had to go back the way we came.. which was difficult given how icy/muddy/snowy it was. Definitely worth it. Will be coming back for this trail soon!

Probably the best trail I’ve seen so far here (second trip) and I only made it 40-50% through this one due to time and weather concerns.

Oooooo! Great hike! Stairs master. The view was worth it!

Did this hike on a cold rainy day in May. Not a lot of people once you get past vernal. During the month of May the water falls are at their peak. Wear water proof jacket and pants if you can as the mist is very heavy. Amazing views at both falls. Take John Muir trail down, it's much quieter and less crowded.

Epic! Made it to the foot of sub dome which was covered in snow. Worth the amazing views!

Awesome hike! Definitely strenuous! Be careful, especially going down, sand and/or moisture can make the path and steps very slippery. Also, there is no potable water available on the trail, and the restroom is closed at Vernal Falls. 3/4/20

did this trail 2/26 it's usually closed this time of year but we've had a mild winter so far and the rangers opened it up, a tough trail with incredible views

Mom fell

Challenging trail with very steep stairs at certain points on the edge of scary cliffs, not for people scared of heights. Leave some in the tank for coming back down as part of the John Major trail is closed for the winter so you have to come back the way you came. Great views.

A truly beautiful albeit strenuous hike. I was going to take the Mist trail like I'd done before. No such luck, lol. The John Muir trail was closed due to falling rocks. Oh well, the knees are feeling it tonight. The stairs part is very steep for me with my short legs. I actually ended up hiking 17 miles because I hiked from the Ahwahnee. Not a whole lot of water this dry year, but still a fantastic hike. Hiked on 2/24/20

Great trail and an amazing opportunity to enjoy the waterfalls and landscapes in Yosemite. Different levels is difficulty for different peoples but always with fun and great spirit. Get ready for some missing parts and extra difficulties in some areas that could be slippery and just enjoy!!!
