Tips

The Verna Dunshee Trail is the paved, outer loop featuring a viewing platform. The Plank Walk is a rocky dirt trail that ends at Mount Tam East Peak Fire Look Out Station. Both have beautiful views of the Bay area. Accessibility: The outer loop, the Verna Dunshee Trail, is less steep (although it still has some steep sections), paved, and considered the more wheelchair or stroller friendly route. It is typically at least four feet wide. The estimated grade is mostly gentle except for steep sections between 8% and 12% at about 0.3 and 0.7 miles from the parking area. Assistance may be needed there. There are wheelchair accessible parking, restrooms, drinking fountains, and picnic areas by the trailhead.

Parking, restrooms, drinking fountains, and picnic areas are available near the trailhead. Drive close to the summit.

Mt. Tamalpais State Park 801 Panoramic Highway Mill Valley, CA 94941 (415) 388-2070

The trail is suitable for strollers and wheel chairs, but be mindful of the narrowness of the trail and lack of protection from the steep drops. Keep a close eye on small kids! - Busy roads and parking lots for the state park and neighboring Muir Moods can be avoided with an early start. - Coastal fog can reduce visibility, but frequently burns off during the day leading to the dramatic revealing of spectacular views. - The road from Pan Toll to East Peak may be closed on days with highest fire-risk.

Cold. Makes sense, given where it is. Be ready to walk through the clouds!

Beautiful and scenic trails. Safe for all the family. Very short trails, if you like hiking I recommend to do them all for more mileage. Love the history!

Easy, short loop but there are some inclines. If its a hot day bring a lot of water. The view at the top is worth it

Easy trail but will get your heart pumping going up the .5 mile Plank Trail and rocky dirt trail to the Mount Tam East Peak Fire Look Out Station but when you reach the top, it’s beautiful looking at the wonders of the God’s creations. Went back down then went around the Verna Dunshee trail which is only about 1 mile. Make sure you wear hat or a cap because it’s super hot with and limited shade depending on time of day you hike.

HikingFeeNo shade

There is a parking fee, no shade around the loop. I didn’t complete the other portion of the hike. Didn’t have the energy for the heat today. But it’s a very beautiful loop around!

Beautiful trail! The loop is very well maintained. The loop is so easy, it’s mostly flat and didn’t take long aside from stopping for views. We were lucky enough to go on a clear afternoon, you could see the whole bay. Also took the trail up to the fire look out. That trail is shorter but steeper. The fire trail starts with a walk way for the steepest portion, but some of the trail is climbing over decent sized rocks. Took about a half hour to get up there. Took less than 10 minutes to get down.

Stunning, panoramic views at the top. Roads to the trail are constant switchbacks for about an hour, so if you get car sick easily, be prepared.

Winding roads up to the summit, short, scenic hike with a pretty sweet firewatch tower.

Hiking

Short hike, the lower portion is paved and accessible, great views and even some connecting trail options, including a nice viewpoint to a rocky overlook. Upper part via the initial "plank trail" takes you to the top and fire lookout, with a great 360 view. Go on a clear day. On top of the east peak of Mt. Tam, this hike is worth a stop with great views of the city and surrounding areas. The pay station was overstuffed, had not been emptied for a while.

Short trail with gorgeous views of East Bay, SF and the ocean. The "scenic overlook" offshoot trail that, according to the sign, "ends in 400 feet"... does not; don't try to reach the end unless you're up for a MUCH longer and harder hike. (We turned around after reaching a huge flat-ish rock with beautiful unobstructed views.)

Hiking

One of the most beautiful hikes I've been on. We went in the morning right before the sun come up and I highly recommend. The colors in the sky and the fog were out of this world. You get 360 views of the valley and of San Francisco. It is a relatively easy hike, the road to get to the top is pretty windy.

Walking

If you go on a weekend, have cash for parking. Easy trail with great view of East Bay, SF, and the coast. There's a lookout area that's great for photos. Very flat trail, not intense at all. I saw a guy with a scooter kind of thing for his knee.
