BackpackingBridge outGreat!

Went up 8/14/20 - 8/16/20. We went clockwise, Day 1: Fernandez to Vandeburg Lake, Day 2: Vandebug Lake to Lady lake to Lillian Lake, Day 3 Lillian Lake to Fernandez. Great trip. The road (Beasore Rd, 5S07) is out for bridge repair, west of the trailhead. Here's what we did as a work around, to come in from the east: coming from the south, take Minarets road (CA 81) north from the North/South Fork area. 4S81 ends at a T, with right turn being 5S30 to Clover Meadow campground/ranger station, left turn being 5S07 Beasore Road towards Minarets Pack Station. Go left for about 2 miles, you'll see a right turn with a sign for Fernandez trailhead, take that. Another couple of miles and you'll see the trailhead, can't miss it. Google maps does not show the Fernandez trailhead in the correct location, but the dead end of 5S05 is a good approximation. The roads from 81 are not paved, but a standard car can make it if you drive slow. We had great weather (low in low 50s, high in low 80s), absolutely no bugs/mosquitos (very suprised), and very few people on the trail (saw only like 2 other groups camping on Vandeburg Lake and Lillian Lake). Lots of fish jumping at flies at both lakes. i brought a pole but didn't catch anything.

BEWARE! Road 5S07 to the trailhead is closed (July 23, 2020) and will entail about an hour long detour. Then, without GPS, unless you know the area, it is very difficult to find the trailhead and the road is treacherous and not good for sedans. The lakes are very crowded with families, dogs, horses, etc. Not a peaceful getaway, at least not this time of year. Mosquitoes are brutal, so bring lots of DEET. The lakes are indeed spectacularly beautiful though. Just wait to go in September when the road is fixed and the kids are back in school. I came here about 10 years ago in the fall. Only saw 1 other person in 4 days.

Hiking

Great Trek! Hike this June 13-14, 2020. Fernandez Trailhead to Lilian lake, Vandeberg Lake loop, counter-clockwise. Trailhead: Fernandez Trailhead, reachable off Beasore Rd, via 5S05. The trailhead sign on Beasore Rd is well marked. Bumpy, but can be reached with regular sedan - slowly :) Trail Conditions: Open freeway. Only a very short trail section directly south and slightly west of Lilian lake was not well marked and easy to lose. Just look for the cut trees, and follow your map. Bug factor: 1 out of 10. Maybe a few by any of the lakes you pass by, thats about it. Dog friendly: Yes! Excellent hike. Please follow safe practices with your dog. Crowded: Except at the trailhead itself, we didnt see another person until the end of our 2nd and last day. Recommendation: Fantastic hike! Highly recommend counter-clockwise, and pass Lilian lake from East to West. I wouldnt want to be hiking the other way, with a full pack, up that steep incline. Views are incredible. Two points in particular just south of Lilian lake are stunning.

First to Review

We hiked the Lilian Loop trail as a day hike, but it would be fun to have done an overnight hike as well. My boyfriend and I hiked with our Border Collie and he had a great time too. The elevation gain was mostly gradual and it made it easy to hike quickly. We recommend coming from Fernandez and taking the Walton up to get to Lilian Lake. There were sections on the trail with very little shade, snow, there were many creek crossings. The bugs were not overwhelming, but definitely bring bug spray for the sections of the trail that are near water or meadows. Overall the hike was enjoyable and had a lot to offer, there were panoramic views and beautiful lakes.
