Gradual incline with a few steep hills all the up to the halfway point exactly (where you get your first view of the lake) then gradual decline back down to the parking. Tip: day use parking is on $5 during the week. I was the only hiker on the trail today. It’s mostly used for mountain biking. It’s wide enough that I felt safe stepping to the side when they passed. I felt like this was a moderately hard hike mostly due to its length. Not very many views. I don’t think I’ll hike it again

HikingFeeGreat!

Trail was great views were awesome... I went during the week and it was very quiet... it’s part of an RV campground so you gotta pay and sign a waiver to get in.. $5 per person during the week and $10 on weekends... there is a lot of mountain biking trails which I can’t wait to go ride and tons of route options if you want to mix it up.. easy to navigate and mostly this particular trail is basic fire road but still nice to hike.

Wasn’t crowded until the very end when 100’s of mountain bikers showed up with some type of event. Yes you do have to walk past RV’s and such but well worth it once you’re in the hills. Left leg is an Incline gradually for 3 + miles until Oak Mountain then gradually downhill to the lake and back to parking.

I wish the trail was more clearly marked. I had to stop because of this. Didn’t want to get lost so late in the day!

Nice hike, mostly flat. Has some steep climbs after the dam up to the Oak mountain. Did it as an out and back. You can go down to the beach of the lake, it’s quite calm there. Views of the lake are quite good but you have to cover couple of miles through heavily crowded RV park.

Overall we survived! We went off trail a little and had to climb up a very steep mountain. It was very fun though!

Paid $5 for the day. It was a quiet hike with no shade. It would be a great place for mountain biking.

I didn’t get a chance to do the full trail, the lake view is nice but nothing else super spectacular. Walking through the RV park is a little odd but ok. I only had to pay $5.

The lake was beautiful and quiet. This is an RV resort so it was a little awkward walking through the RV park to get to the trail. I’d suggest going again only while camping or with bikes.

It takes about 3 miles to get to the lake, but the view is beautiful! If you continue the trail on the side of the mountain, once you get to the top, you have to come back by the side of the lake, otherwise, the side of the mountain gets very steep. Have fun!

Go to entrance of vail lake rv resort it’s 10 bucks you can park near the front and walk to the trail by the pool I posted a picture of the map it’s a shorter hike going through the wash or you can take the red trail mapped on the all trails map that goes on the fire road to the whole loop up to you

I have mixed feelings about this area overall. Its def beautiful and had a moderate steady incline. I agree that it's possibly best for mountain bikers. This trail was difficult to find - the map you receive at the entrance looks like a seagull was given a felt tip marker and failed a game of pictionary. Basically you head towards the "Village" from the parking lot, and you'll see a putput mini golf and basketball court and then a sea of RV Campers. there are NO signs for the trails listed on the map, but there is at least a sign that says "Merlot" (as is on the map) so follow that sign to the left and cut across those campsites. Go along the wooden fence and see TALL METAL FENCE gates to the Right. There is a small sign that says "Pedestrians and Cyclists Only" - There's your "trailhead" to the driveway road along the Lake. At the end of the driveway (the dam) you'll see a well traveled path incline to the Left and head up. I've uploaded some photos noting the "Chalk Hill" satellite - it's marked on the map as Chalk Hill, but yet there are NO SIGNS guiding you as the trail thins and widens. If you are going now as Summer comes up - WATCH OUT FOR RATTLESNAKES. My dog and I went on a wrong path, that as I look back appears to be made for bikes? Whether it was intentional or made by off-trail bikers (it was so well beaten in, so I truly could not tell) we encountered an adult rattlesnake just hiding in the shade of the bush next to the trail 2 ft away from us - it rattled and started to stand up. We were very lucky to get away. That being said, I do hope if they can afford putput golf, a swimming pool, bathrooms and a basketball court - they may be able to afford posting trail signs in the future. PLEASE BE CAREFUL walking along tall grass/bushes- there is NO shade at all, rocks can be loose and you can fall (god forbid it's into a dangerous situation)... There is a lot of bugs and wildlife scat in/on the dirt, so watch where you are going with care! Highly recommend asking in-depth questions on what trail you're looking for, with the person working at the entrance - because I wish I did after experiencing lack of trail markers.
