Upper Salmon Lake is a 1.6 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Sierra City, California that offers the chance to see wildlife and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, trail running, and nature trips and is best used from June until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail.

Directions from Sierra City: Travel approximately 5 miles east of Sierra City on Hwy. #49, turn onto Gold Lake Hwy. at Bassetts Station. Continue on Gold Lake Hwy. for 4 miles until you reach the clearly marked Salmon Lake junction. Turn left and proceed to Upper Salmon Lake. The trailhead is on your right. There is limited parking.

This was a challenging hike! Almost all uphill and 1/2 mile of it VERY steep uphill! The scenery was beautiful and not crowded. There were many great lookouts to take a break and enjoy the gorgeous surroundings! This trail goes by Salmon Lake Lodge which is very cool! If you go on this hike make sure to be prepared with plenty of water and snacks for fuel!
