Upper Delaveaga Loop is a 1.6 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Santa Cruz, California that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
The trail is narrow and loops through the redwood trees while following the golf course part of the way. Would recommend it for a short hike if pressed for time in Santa Cruz but there are definitely other options in the area that are better. The trail is fairly busy too with dogs and people.
Parked at a different entrance than the trail directions. I parked by the dog park on your way to the park rather than up by the golf course. Plenty of shade
Nice loop to run. A storm just passed through the last 2 days so there was some blowdown and one huge fallen tree but the trail was still accessible. The trail is covered in forest canopy and very shaded. Its a great trail to stay in the shade on a sunny day. I had to check the map a couple times to make sure I was still on the trail, markers were present but they were not simple to understand, but I didn't take any stars off for that because you literally cannot get lost here as there's golf course on the upside from you and a road down below. A great short trail for a quick run or hike. Bay laurel trees and Ivy, and poison oak present.
Listed as 7mi. 650ft. 3.5hr. Recording stopped prematurely, most likely at lunch break.
I really enjoy this trail, light traffic, lots of tree shade, and multiple options for different lengths. The convenience of it being so close to the city is perfect.
