Tuna Canyon Trails is a 3.8 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Topanga, California that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, and mountain biking and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Tuna Canyon Park provides a number of easy trails. Some of the easiest hikes to excellent ocean views in the Santa Monica Mountains. This area is popular with local residents, lots of dog walking.
Limited street parking.
This was an easy hike at the beginning but then coming back up, was a good workout not gonna lie. I feel good and I got a good sweat too. Beautiful views indeed.
Tuna Canyon Park is probably the best overall outdoor space in the Santa Monica Mountains, east of Point Mugu State Park, for coastal views. Good views are available from all of the park’s 4 major trails, with the Big Rock Lateral also offering views of the Castro Crest and Saddle Peak mountain areas. I did all of the named trails, a worthwhile endeavor which totals to a little more than 8 miles and 1800 feet of elevation gain, and another mile for the short unnamed trails in the north central part of the park. Budwood Motorway is actually a public, not private, route down to the park boundary at elevation 1000’. At that point the route abruptly ends at a large gully washout. This is the only one of the 4 major trails that is a single track trail and not a road. You cannot drive to the park directly from Pacific Coast Highway. A short distance below the park, Tuna Canyon Road becomes one way southbound. There is road shoulder parking for 18-20 vehicles, which is full even on weekdays, but there is frequent turnover. The only other negative about the park is too many dog owners flouting the leash regulation.
Amazing views of the Pacific Ocean!! My friend and I got to the trailhead around 8:30am on a Sunday and we essentially had the entire trail to ourselves for the first half of the hike! More people started showing up around 10:00am. So, if you're looking for a peaceful hike, with a good (but not strenuous) uphill climb, great views of the ocean, and a trail all to yourself - Sundays before 10am are your best bet!!
Gorgeous views. Not too crowed. Parking is a little tricky and trails aren’t well marked. Pretty easy hikes
First of all, I want to clarify that this is NOT an easy hike unless you are already an experienced hiker. I would rate it difficult. It is a long, hard, hot trail that's mostly uphill in the blazing sun with no shade. Come prepared. The views are spectacular though. There is no designated parking. You park on the street and parking is sparce, so come early.
Moderate hike if you go all the way down near the houses, good incline back up. No designated parking lot: I came this Friday morning around 6:45 am. Park on the side of the road. Wide roads good for dogs and biking. Super windy at some points, almost lost my hat. Absolutely amazing views of the ocean and the coast. Highly recommend for a casual hike
