Great day hike off the TRT to the Spur Trail Viewpoint (Picnic Rock) often thought of as the best views for the least amount of work. Moderate gain in elevation with spectacular views of Lake Tahoe and surrounding peaks makes this a must do short hike in the Tahoe area. The trailhead is up the hill from Northstar, between Truckee and Kings Beach in North Lake Tahoe. Park in the lot on 267, or if you have 4WD or a higher clearance vehicle, you can drive a ways up the dirt road across from the parking area. The trail is smooth single track and can easily be extended into a longer hike if you stay on the Rim Trail. If you just want to go to the viewpoint, about a mile in you will see a tree with an arrow shaped sign that says "Picnic Rock Lake View" letting you know you are almost there. There is no water along the trail, but there is a bit of shade to keep you cool on warmer days.

Good workout, with a spectacular lake/mountain view at the end. The majority of the trail is devoid of lake views but it’s well shaded making it ideal for hikes on a hot day. Bring a snack to enjoy on picnic rock and if you want to see something cute, pack some peanuts and put a few out for the chipmunks. BTW, Be sure to take the “spur” when you come to it.

Nice hike. Good and strenuous on the way up, great view, and an easy walk back.

Nice little hike. Well maintained and marked to cool view. We just saw a few people and some discarded dog waste bags (eww). Otherwise a great moderate short hike.

Super easy walk to Picnic Rock. Great view of the Tahoe basin. Take a picnic and enjoy the sunny view. Good snow shoe hike in the winter. Could be 5 stars but copious amounts of dog poop require constant attention on the trail and detracts from outdoorsy atmosphere.

The view at the top was worth the hike, even for our kids who are usually grumpy hiking uphill. Lots of families with kids on the trail. The view made for great family pics.

Very nice scenic view with a great payoff at the end with an assortment of large flat rocks to picnic or take in the views. Easily connects to other trails if you’re in the mood to extend your hike.

Great easy/moderate trail to exceptional views perfect place to bring a picnic, thermos of coffee, bottle of wine, good whiskey etc .... and just sit on one of the many flat rock formations at the top it’s a good idea to bring a packable jacket or blanket as it can be quite windy and chilly at the top

Not too busy Labor Day weekend. Handful of hikers, no cyclists. Parking available on the uphill side of 267 if you drive up a very short distance to the trailhead signboard, plenty of space on the wrong side of 267 as well.
