This OHV Route takes from the paved road to the Trona Pinnacles, a unique geological feature consisting of 500 tufa spires rising from the bed of the Searles Lake (dry) basin.

Nice easy hike in such a eerie and fascinating landscape. Careful for motocross : they share the same trails. The ones when i was there were careful and respectful. Nice walk with your dog (on a leash with those bikes). Don’t miss the little cave close to restrooms. Former prison cell? Shop for tools?! IDK Road to get there : 5 miles of very rugged terrain. Drive slow

Experiencing The Pinnacles: The Pinnacles are very fascinating from afar, to see the peaks in the distance is to be in awe... but much like B Lustmord states, the hikes around the pinnacles are definitely not as special. They are best experienced from a distance, where you can take them all in... Though I bet to be there at sunrise or sunset is an amazing experience! Wildlife: We saw a bunch of zebra-tailed lizards on the drive up to the pinnacles, and a few on the pinnacles themselves. They were so fast! And very pretty... light coloration on their ribs, and zebra stripes on their tail. Very neat. When you leave, you end up noticing there are other tufa pinnacles off the sides of the main highway in fields, though they are much more sparse. The Hike(s): Nothing is clearly marked as any one particular hike or loop. You just kind of explore at your leisure along footpaths. Some nice breezes run through despite the heat in some of the surrounding areas, which we appreciated. It is not 12 mi. The drive is counted into that distance. Once you're at the pinnacles parking lot, you're feet away from the pinnacles themselves. The Drive: Good up to a point where the road ends up feeling more washboarded out (we were in a 2WD) and there were 2-3 deep washouts created by people who clearly must have gotten stuck in the mud and only dug themselves deeper -- so keep aware on the drive! Nearby: Fish Rocks aren't far away when on the main highway, so those are definitely worth a visit en route or on your way back to civilization.

The pinnacles are worth a visit but the trails to get to them are nothing special.

first time here, brought the wife and kids in the jeep. Easy trails, which is good as I'm new to trailing. We had a blast, I suggest when u first get here just by the bathroom is a little cave you can walk into that only goes in 15ft. 3 yr old loved climbing the rocks everytime we drove to another rock formation.

The Pinnacles is worth visiting. I recognized the scenery from watching "Lost in Space" as a kid, early episode when the Jupiter II Crash landed on a planet. There are also scenes of Professor Robinson flying around wearing his jet pack, the Chariot, and the Giant who attacked them. It was so cool for me all these years later to stumble on Trona and Red Rock Canyon, and recognize these landscapes used in old TV shows I saw as a child in the Mid 1960s.

Had a great time with my husband it felt like we were the only ones on the planet off roading yesterday , the day was beautiful in this part of the desert! We were in Trona and finished by visiting Randsberg.

Otherworldly area, bleak and deserted. The "12.2 mile trail" referenced in the listing is actually vehicle miles from the pavement to the middle of the pinnacles. There is no formal trail here, but you can wander around the rock formations with little chance of getting lost as long a you keep within sight of where you parked. Great spot for artsy photography :)

Great place to stop on the way to Death Valley. The dirt road is well maintained and I was able to make it to the pinnacles in a 2wd low clearance passenger car with no problems. You can spend as much or as little time as you want here wandering around on unmarked trails. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

You might recognize this otherworldly landscape from having seen it used as a backdrop in film and television, most notably the climax of Star Trek V. The "trail" tends to be rather informal; you basically wander around among the spires to your heart's content. For those who prefer not to get out of their cars, you can tour the pinnacles using the network of unpaved roads and tracks that crisscross the area (70% of these are not shown on the map). I was out here camping overnight on my way to Death Valley. (Primitive camping is allowed, pack-it-in, pack-it-out. There is a vault toilet in the main parking area, and fires are permitted in established fire rings - bring your own firewood). If you enjoy desert camping, or photographing weird landscapes, then this place is for you.
