Tips

Tide pools, waterfalls, moss covered forests, rugged bluffs, crashing waves, sandy beaches, jaw dropping scenery... A true hidden gem! The more time you have, the more you will discover. The trails are easy, but not maintained, so keep that in mind. All of the trails with beach access will be steep due to the rugged bluffs and cliffs that make the area so beautiful. Trinidad Head parking lot is the easiest way to access the beach directly.

This is an un-maintained FREE public access state forest/beach. TSB has spectacular views all year round, crashing swells in the winter, morning fog and daily sunshine in summer, lush greenery in spring/summer, dry clear days in fall. The trails can be muddy in winter but the rain usually lets up for plenty of hiking time. Elk Head is perfect for whale watching in spring/fall.

Super simple trail that takes you to a cute over look, and further down to the beach! Highly recommend if you're dropping in Trinidad

Short but beautiful! This is the epitomy of everything we love about a Norcal hike; majestic redwoods, gorgeous coastline and fog all in one.

Beautiful! Only reason I did four instead of five stars was due to the broken stairs going from the main trail to the beach. We will definitely do the trail again in the future!

What a beautiful hike. Up on cliffs overlooking the ocean and then down into the amazing cove. Very easy trail, besides a couple climbs. The flat parts are very safe, we saw a lady with a cane and she was doing great. Blackberries along the trail make it extra sweet. Dog friendly!!

This was a really fun trail. took our 2, 4 and 7 year olds. The beach was a bit harder to get to but very cool when we go down. The cliff off looks was very pretty and super windy.

It’s an easy stroll through the forest, with incredible coastal views along the way. The descent to Elk Head is an incredible panoramic view. Crashing waves, the sun peeking through a cloudy sky: this hike is good for the soul.

Beautiful quick hike to some of the Northern California coastal cliffs. We went at sunset and it was gorgeous - the water was serene yet powerful/intimidating. It can be a little muddy at parts. Make sure you continue all the way (you'll pass under this white painted wood "arch") to get the edge lookout, though there are many lookout points along the way that show the cove.

From State Beach parking lot you can go left down the creek trail to State Beach, or through the forest North then down a trail to College Cove. Or stay on the Bluff and continue to Elk Head for Bluff views of the ocean, and seal rock. Between State Beach and College Cove there’s a rock arch by Pewetole Island that is great for tidepooling and photos.

Beautiful. From the parking area you can go either left or right both ways offer something special. The beach area is gorgeous and there is a large rock that people climb to the top for additional views! I do believe this is clothing optional beach as I have often seen people stripping down. This is one of my favorite local spots that keeps me coming back several times a year!

Went here with our dog and two kids (ages 2&6) very easy trail with beautiful wildflowers along the entire trail. Took a path down to the water, it was a beautiful cove with lots of tide pools.
