Tucked back in the south east corner of socal is this great little spot. Usually frowned upon but always a great time...off-road your vehicles through here. Great hike or trail run. You can head to the back climb the ridge and head into bell loop above. Great area
Trabuco Trail is also a great way to get to Los Pinos Peak. This works out to be a nice 10 mile out-and-return.
I have hiked this trail twice this year. Memorial Day and later in early August. Directions are clear. 2nd time I made it a loop taking the horsethief trail up to the divide road and walked the road east to the trailhead going back down on trabuco canyon trail (kind of tricky to find this unmarked trail) Took about 4 hours, bring plenty of water, saw only a few other hikers. Watch/listen for downhill bikers. Look for the "Christmas tree" on the Trabuco trail.
I went up the west horsethief trail trying to get to trabuco peak. Due to a late start I ended up turning around at the fork. Nice trail and scenery, you must watch out for the mountain bikers and motorcycles however which is the reason this gets 4 rather than 5 stars.
