The Fort, Sandy Cove, and a walk south to the Reef Campground and Day Use Area Visiting Fort Ross begins more as a meander than a point to point walk. The fort site and its structures have a grand and sweeping view of the Pacific, the local coastal terraces, and densely forested ridges inland. Fort Ross is the site of the southernmost point of colonization in North America by Russia in the early 1800's and was established concurrently with the expansion of the early California Missions. Here the Russians established a trading outpost and farmlands to supply Russia's Alaskan colonies. The site also provided a base of operations for further exploration from 1812 to 1841. On this walk one will start at the Visitor's Center and then stroll through the village and fort sites. After leaving the fort, the walk takes one out onto a bluff and site of the former Eskimo Village and down a road to Sandy Cove, the site of the first shipyard in California. The walk then takes us southward along the bluff to the nearby campgrounds and adjoining cove. From there one can return to the fort or continue to the bluff overlooking Fort Ross Reef.

Great place and worth the 8 dollars it cost to get in the park. Explore the fort, back paths, and beaches it has to offer. Make sure to hit up the visiter center to grab a map.
