To find a shaded hike, El Corte De Madera is always one of my top choices in this area. We tried a few new trails this time - Manzanita Trail, Timberview Trail, and Giant Salamander Trail. In fact, the other two trails are meant to just route to the Giant Salamander Trail that suggested by David's ranger friend who works in The Midpen Open Space. These trails were shaded and fewer hikes but a lot of bikers. Manzanita Trail couldn't see the Pacific Ocean. It is a rugged trail. The old-growth giant redwood trees in the Timberview Trail were as equally cool as the Mariposa Grove in Yosemite. We detoured to an area called "Old Growth Redwood". A redwood tree here was so tall that we couldn't see its top. Giant Salamander Trail is truly a hidden gem. Even hard to find its entrance. The single and narrow trail was covered and surrounded by dense redwood trees and passed the Ed Corte De Madera Creek with two nice bridges. We parked close to the famous 1800-year-old Methuselah Tree. It is fenced but we could still see it from the gate. This celebrity tree is the largest redwood in the Santa Cruz Mountains outside of the Big Basin SP. It was a fun day.

To be perfectly honest, that was such an unexpected trip. I did not realize it was predominantly a mountain biking trail because I did not do that much research. However the entire trail is covered by trees and starting from the top it is extremely steep in the decline elevation. I like to hike hard and fast, so pushing hard back up the hill was extremely rewarding and fun. It’s very likely I’ll return here either by foot or my bike another day.

Returned on Manzanita Trail. This side trail is single track but easy going. Several nice vistas and varied vegetation

Awesome trail! Great scenery with small waterfalls fed by San Gregorio Creek. Lots of banana slugs. Good mix of ascents and descents with the return being mostly uphill. Only drawback is that you have to share the trail with mountain bikers. Otherwise, perfect.

Nice and shady. Slightly muddy. Some steep parts. Not heavily trafficked. More MTBers than hikers.

We end up doing Timberview - Giant Salamander - Methuselah loop. A little over 6 miles. Nice well shaded trails all the way. Beautiful forest, large trail except Giant Salamander. Downhill on Timberview then all the way uphill back. Not too bad uphill, about 3 miles total.

Loads of Scub Oak, redwoods and wildflowers. One real nice rock formation. The paths are cleared and wide. There's lots of hills and gullies and a good amount of shade. Good family hike.

First to Review

The hiking was pretty decent, but the description doesn't lie when it says that the trails are used primarily for mountain biking. There were a lot of cyclists blazing past us until we turned off on one of the steepest trails to go down into the gully. Nonetheless, it was very enjoyable.
