Getting There

FIRE CLOSURE: As of February 2021 there are closures in this park or area due to wildfire. For more information, please visit https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/angeles/alerts-notices. Texas Canyon is a popular rock climbing destination about 30 minutes from the San Fernando Valley. Besides the technical climbs (from 5.0 to 5.13b) on the sandstone conglomerate formations, there are dozens of easy use trails that allow you to wander among the rocks and caves. The views from the rocks are stunning, and there are miles of other trails to explore from this area.

Adventure Pass required! From Hwy 14 north, take exit 9 for Sand Canyon Road and turn left. Proceed up Sand Canyon Road about 2 miles to Sierra Highway. Turn right on Sierra Highway, and proceed north about 4.7 miles. At the sign for the Rowher Flats OHV area, turn left onto Rush Canyon Road. Rush Canyon Road is paved for the first half mile, and then becomes a dirt road that is passable with care in a car. At about 1.8 miles, look on the left for a gate for forest service road 5N15. This is the trailhead.

Super cool cave when you first get to the rocks! We went off the path exploring the rocks! There was a pathway in the middle of the biggest rock that was awesome to walk through.

Great trail. A bit steep at parts. Lots of meandering offshoots of the main train. The road up to the trailhead is a little rough.

A nice little adventure for the locals. there are a network of Mtn Bike paths, and dirt roads. This is not maintained trails, and can be pretty rough in some spots. where lug soled shoes or boots if you venture out in this area.

We took the family and friends down this hike on presidents day. It was a blast. Perfect weather and no bugs. Little more vertical than we thought it was going to be was very cool. Make sure you know you are doing some off roading to get to parking and I didn't have cell service for a majority of time.

Gate was closed but we expected it. It’s a moderate hike around and coming back up. Decent hike for 1.8 miles. Bees were minimal too cold for them yet

Nice area. Just use caution driving up the last bit. Winter may be best for those concerned about bees.

Hiking

Very pretty hike! Perfect for photography. However, there’s a bee farm towards the entrance of the hike, so if you’re allergic to bees this is not the trail for you. (Mom got stung on the way back.) The original trail is pretty steep as well for small children, we took a side trail that worked for everyone. Overall, great hike. Only problem was the bees. :)

It was a great hike! The only issue I had was there was a heck ton of bees. Be advised to be careful on some of the rocks because there are bee nests. Don’t want to get stung while climbing

Hiking

This is one of those special hikes that remind me how incredible CA is. It was just what I needed. I parked at the turn off from Sierra highway and opted to hike the extra mile (plus some). All in all, made my hike 3.98 miles per my Apple Watch. I have a Prius, and since the road becomes dirt and slightly rough, I would also recommend this if you drive similar, although a Mercedes sedan pitted past me on my walk up, so it can be done with a two wheel drive! Lots of flowers along the way up, very green due to our recent rains. It did rain on me during the hike. The valley view at the turnoff from the dirt road/start of the hike was stunning, could see for miles. The cave seemed even more incredible after taking in the valley only to see this giant stone rising up. I’ve been hiking every day this week, this was the least physically strenuous hike (so a good recovery day hike) but had the best payoff with views and intrigue. You could definitely turn this into a longer hike, there were many trails all around. I can’t wait to show this one to some friends.

Really lovely hike. I went during the week, so the gate was closed (I think it might be open on weekends). So I had to walk an extra mile or two to get to the trailhead. The initial ascent before the trailhead was pretty underwhelming, but things vastly improved once I reached the trail. The boulders are so fascinating to poke around. There are even some small caves to explore. We received some heavy rains in the weeks prior to my hike, so little waterfalls were trickling down the boulders. The end of the trail leads you to a pretty spectacular view of the valley below. There are not a lot of trees, but the landscape was more lush than I expected.

Super trail, one of my favorites in SoCal so far. The rocks are much larger than I expected, very interesting formations. I was able to get to the trailhead in my Sonata but it was a bit touch and go. Just go slow. Once at the trailhead, I would classify this hike between easy and moderate. You can definitely choose your own adventure on this trail. Will absolutely be back.

It is a secret little spot where you pull off to the right of red rover avenue. Our car couldn't make it up the road so we walked from the main road. If you have a lower car that isn't for off roading the walk is only a mile more and it's a pretty moderate hike up to the trailhead. The hike itself is on a closed road and you just follow the path around the side of the hill and look down to these rock formations. Really great experience there are little caves inside the rock and climbers are climbing all around it. For a hike its more of a sight to see.
