Tenaja Falls is a 1.5 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Murrieta, California that features a waterfall and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
This is a cool hike with a little bit of an incline. It's really nice when the water is flowing. The drive up to the trail head is fun but kind of sketchy since it's on a small windy road. Overall super fun hike! I made a quick youtube video with some drone shots if you want to check out. My youtube name is Magana Ventures. I make hiking vids and I shared a link of this hike below :) https://youtu.be/LncVaNcfQ68
Nice little trail. Be sure to take a screen shot of the route and written directions because you won’t have any service when you arrive.
Beautiful hike! It was short but easy...with two kids (7yr & 3yr) plus our 27lb dog, it took us about an hour and a half. The trail is a bit tricky to find once you get to the creek, you have to cross over. Unfortunately, there wasn’t water on the falls but still in the pools below. Be careful of those, the rocks are slippery from the moss and my daughter slipped in. I’m glad I packed an extra pair of socks
absolutely beautiful. well worth it when you see the falls. just some things to consider and to know, there are no cell service at all (at&t), one lane for 4+ miles, some road are pretty bumpy with potholes, and watch out for cars that would speed through there. don't have a lot of visual with the windy road. almost got hit by someone that was driving recklessly, flying through the road, and they made a jump on a bump coming towards at us. anyways, when you are on the trail and pick falls trail, make sure to go across the creek on the left side to get to the trail. we loved it! brought our two little dogs and they did awesome, but I think I will not bring them next time just so I can climb rocks, etc lol. just something to consider if you want to do that kind of stuff. had my 10 years old son too and he did great! we had a blast. seriously beautiful views.
This trail was fun to get to! Windy roads, beautiful vistas, horse ranches everywhere. The trail is quick with decent terrain. Perfect for an afternoon or morning hike. Plenty of shade. Unfortunately, there is no running water right now. You'll be better off waiting for the spring floods.
Arrived at 7am today on a Sunday’s Hard to find the actual maintained trail at the beginning, you have to cross the riverbed to reach it. Lots of people walking along unofficial trails along the riverbed. Lots of poison oak. 3 or more groups of people at the water fall in groups of 4+ at 8am. Parking lot full by 9am. **Need a wilderness pass in the Cleveland National Forest. We had one but didn’t see anyone else with one. Better to get one for $30 at REI than to chance it and get a ticket later.
The trail is mostly uphill, about 1-1.5 hour long hike to the falls. Currently, there is only a small amount of water, the small amount of water makes it easy for you to climb all over the falls and obtain some unique viewpoints, be careful- the rocks are smooth and slippery. There is scant shade on the hike up but lots of shade at the beginning and end of the hike. Tons of small bugs that try to attack your face towards the beginning of the hike.
There’s a few other areas you can go to around this trailhead that are beautiful. My friend and I couldn’t actually follow the trail to the falls probably because it’s overgrown and we are fairly new to the activity. There’s plenty of exploring you can do around the trail, be cautious of snakes and spiders. We had seen 2 snakes in the span of about an hour in the afternoon we spent in the area. I’d definitely recommend a photo shoot on some of the rocks on the river!
