First discovery for me of lac tohoe's wonderful environment. Did the hawk's peak today ... the view at the top is just great ! Not easy to find the right trails to start at the bottom but we made it
Great hike to Hawk's Peak with gorgeous views of Eur Valley, & TD. Today, I saw thousands of butterflies in their chrysalis about to emerge. Highly suggest making the trek up to Hawk's Peak via Andromeda to see them. Up and back was about 6 miles or so.
The Far Side trail on the north facing side is still covered by up to 5-6' of snow. The Donner trail on the south facing side does go out 2 miles to the west where it meets the Far Side. Views along Donner trail are great, facing SSW to Castle Peak and mtns on the south side of I80
Euer Valley is a beautiful place in the wintertime.
Excellent for dogs and kids! Saw few bike riders and joggers. A little marshy in some areas. Beautiful scenery and nice creek.
These are actually the trails associated with the Tahoe Donner subdivision, they are well maintained and available to the public as well as long as you park in the parking lots. My parents live here and in the past I have used the to snowshoe, but this summer we walked them pretty extensively, they are great for on trail hiking. My 60 year old parents who are active, but not hikers, can keep up on all the trails, but get a good workout on the steeper ones, there are numerous Vista points including a great one over Donner Lake only one mile out. If you're feeling more adventurous these trail hook up to the system in Euer Valley.
Wish there was more snow, but enjoyed my first snowshoeing experience.
We hiked the Summit Lake trail off of Donner Pass. Parking is available at the Pacific Crest Trail parking lot. Start from there going first east, then turning north you go under Interstate 80 via two tunnels. The change in elevation is a few hundred feet, and the vistas once you rise above the highway level, are stunning. Summit Lake is beautiful with large granite boulders to lay on while watching your dog swim and fetch. The water is warm enough in August for a human swim, as well.
These trails can take you any number of places - out to Euer Valley, or up to Eagle Peak, out to Carpenter Valley, or from Glacier Point, you can hike out towards Negro Canyon and even up to the Donner Rim trail. If you want to bike, there is ample mountain biking on these same trails or other trails nearby.

Tahoe Donner is a subdivision in Truckee that has an extensive trail system that is well marked, there is about 30+ miles of trails, covering over 2000 acres from aspen groves to ridges nand creeks and a valley, there is a great variety, scenery and some great views.. There are also many unmarked singletrack trails that connect. There are maps at trailheads, or can be downlaoded from www.tahoedonner.com. In the winter is is groomed for cross country skiing.
Thing that is nice about this hike is there are several variations going different ways and different levels of difficulty. If you begin the hike at the trail head, you begin at the end of Alder Creek Rd. There you can obtain a map of the various different routes and sites to see along the way. The hike was great! My husband, 7 year old, 4 year old, and 2 year old as well as the dogs all set out and ended up doing just about 4 miles. Great views and awesome day! Definitely planning on going back and heading out on a different trail!
