The trail starts at the crest of SR 29 between Calistoga and Clear Lake. It is in undeveloped Robert Louis Stevenson State Park, which does not even have maps online. The trail is labeled on on the AllTrails map. The trailhead is across the highway from the Mt. St. Helena trailhead. The trail climbs through a fir forest before breaking out at a signed overlook "Table Rock Overlook". From there it slowly drops down through mostly manzanita areas to a small stream. On the way down it passes a large complex of rock labyrinths. After crossing the stream the trail climbs to a signed trail intersection from which you scramble west over the rocks to the top of Table Rock itself.

Great, strenuous hike mixed with sun and sun.

Beautiful hike. Great mix of shade and sun, up and down - good cardio. Beautiful forest with manzanita everywhere. I wore pants due to other hikers comments on poison oak, but saw very little, and I was watchful for that. Hiking poles definitely a plus for several downhill sections. Not great signage. Good in a couple spots where you could take a wrong turn, but missing others. One real key place was missing - right before you head through a forest section going up to the top. I was following some thick black cables I figured they were laid for hand over hand assist. They veer to the right so I followed that and wound up circling the mountain on the back side, scrambling up barely there game trails and brush to reach the top. Was thrilled to spot the trail headed down (the correct way) through that forest section. Added at least 40 minutes to the hike on my diversion. So the advice is when you see the black cables, after about 20 feet start looking to your left for the trail into the forest. It's not very visible. This one signage issue is the only reason I didn't rate this a 5 star.

Hiked this trail in late August. Started early in the morning to avoid midday heat. Took just under 3 hours out and back. First mile was pretty easy steady climb, wide trail, not too rocky. As others have mentioned, poison oak on both sides of the trail, in some spots shoulder high. Wear long pants and weather permitting long sleeves and be familiar with what poison oak looks like. Second mile after Overlook was steep, rocky and nearly full sun. Just below Overlook, there were several labyrinths just off trail. Can’t imagine how much work it took to build these! Views from Table Rock were spectacular! We could see fog in the Sonoma valley and nearly to the ocean. Steep uphill climbs in full sun on the return is what gives the hike 4 stars for us. Likely much better in the fall/winter months.

Beautiful but hard, especially the second half. I went on a 90 degree July day, which was a mistake. May do again on a cool day!

Cool trail - would do it again. The first lookout is awesome. The rock formations are fun. Then you have to brave some serious poison oak to get to the finale. Wear leggings even though it’s hot. Poison oak is heavy on this trail - you can avoid most of it but good to be aware. Just wash in technu after your hike. It’s worth it.

I enjoyed this trail, the viewpoint halfway in was spectacular. the labyrinth field was very nice. The second half of the trail was rocky and kinda rough but it was a great hike nonetheless. Tips: wear pants and bring a long sleeve layer coz there was a small section that was a bit overgrown and had lots of branches sticking out (I got scratched a few times

Thoroughly enjoyed this hike for its variety in terrain. Some portions are a bit overgrown and you have to push branches out of the way. There's a very small creek crossing as well before you get to the table. The views are rewarding and there's plenty of nice spots to take a break if needed along the way. Since it's not marked in some places that have separate trails that branch off, pay attention to where you're going and what looks familiar. Overall, would recommend, and I plan on returning soon. Nice quick hike for a view with your lunch. Saw people who dragged their kids up and it took them twice as long so keep that in mind.

Great mix of terrain. Fun to climb on the rocks. Make sure to look over the edge of the table for climbers coming up. Beautiful views at the top.

What a beautiful hike. Highly recommend! We had stopped at the first rock outcropping about a mile in a few times in the past. This time we (wife and daughters 10, 7) made it all the way out to table rock. So cool. Was a strenuous hike but one of the more beautiful Northern California hikes we’ve done. Cold but all the rain had everything so green and lush. And there were still traces of snow from last week. Lots of fun scrambling and amazing views.

Hard and technical trail, but the view at the end is worth it!

I did this hike a few years ago, the first section was bunch of switch backs up a steep ravine, once you break free of that, the trail isn't so clearly marked, but you do end up pass into several large rock groups, you even should find a few rock mazes (human made) and then another decent into an lava flow across barely marked area to another climb to the end of the trail.

This is a tough, very rocky trail with lots of vertical. Footing is tricky. Views are restricted to a few spots on the trail. Not recommended for kids! One highlight are the labyrinths along the trail. Table Rock is a bit of an anticlimax but does have a very nice view over Calistoga below. Overall a decent hike but not spectacular. There are other better choices in the area.

Making it all the way out to Table Rock and back may be hard/difficult for those that aren't in athletic shape. My wife and I are weekend warriors when it comes to hiking and while we enjoyed our hike, we found that the trail was pretty rough from the Table Rock overlook marker (around the half way point) on to Table Rock. If you're looking for a great view spot with minimal effort needed, then the first outcropping of rocks just past the overlook marker would be a great hike for those that aren't in the mood to scramble down (and then later back up) washed out trails on often loose rock. Lots of ankle twisters and I wish I'd brought my trekking poles. Overall still a great time, but it wasn't an easy hike for us. We saw families coming up the trail thinking that it was going to be a breeze for their young kids to make it all the way out and back too, and I can't help but to think it's due to a lot of the reviews on this site. You only have a shorter section of rock scramble to go down if you're wanting to see the rock labyrinths, but it's still a bit of a hike for young ones.

Beautiful trail with great views. Lots of poison oak but it's easy to avoid. You don't need hiking boots but I agree that flip flops probably wouldn't be good footwear for this particular hike.

Great hike; Halfway through the hike someone had placed a really cool labyrinth made out of the local rocks. The hike up to that point is fairly easy; after that it gets a little steep ( not bad going down but challenging on the way back). It was fun though; almost like a mini canyon scramble.
