I highly recommend starting early as there is no shade. Green hillsides and an overcast morning made for a nice hike.

Great trail really enjoyed this hike I would agree w other reviews on harder side of moderate w some steep hills. No shade def would not do this on a bright sunny day. Parking lots still closed but decent amount of parking on street. Beautiful booms right now and open trails.

Great hike! Planned on going to iron mountain today but it was super crowded so we opted for this one instead. Parking on the street available and not too busy at all. Definitely moderate in difficulty. Bring lots of water and go early to avoid the heat. There’s a few bikers on the trail but the trail is wide enough to make room for both.

really enjoyed this hike. it's on the harder side of "moderate", with quite a few ups ands downs. no shade, so go early or late. but trails are well maintained and it's absolutely beautiful, especially right now with all the flowers in bloom. Several creeks that are fun to cross.

Overall good trail! I went the day after a very rainy day so I hit a huge stream that forced me to turnaround. Really enjoyed the trail though!

All hills, good for dogs and horses if they are in shape! No shade until you get to the bottom, so about half way, then no trees back,, good ride in winter

Trail is well-marked. Lots of sun exposure. Rated it three starts only because there are so many better options in San Diego county, e.g., Cuyamaca, Laguna, Palomar, Julian.

90% of the trail is pretty easy and flat. Hard part was less than a mile, but it was a good incline. From the parking lot head east up the hill to start the loop. Lots of mountain bikers in the first mile and a half so watch out for them coming up behind you.

Nice walk after lunch with children and dogs. Could be nice for a jogging and probably would be better during spring with flowers.

This was an awesome trail for a Saturday morning hike! Saw a few mountain bikers and horses as well. Definitely plan on sun protection—sections of the trail are not shaded at all. The view from the tops of the hills in the middle of the hike were gorgeous! One of the hilltops has a picnic table, so pack a snack!

We did this trail later in the day (10am to 1 pm or so) in October. The sun was somewhat hot, but in the canyon itself there are frequently shady spots. Lots of animal droppings but no snake or lion sightings. Make sure to use the app so that you don't get off the trail.

Beautiful views of the canyon. The wildflowers were in full bloom. However, most of trail was service road and not really “hiking”. Overall it was relatively a smooth trail with a few areas of challenging inclines. There is no shade so be prepared. Overall a good workout with the longer distance (my app said 6.9 miles) .

Great trail for dogs. Do it in the rain. Lovely. No one around. Parking opens at 8am but we got lucky and someone opened the gate early at 7:30am.

Absolutely beautiful hike with multiple types of elevation changes. I recommend this hike in the early morning hours or on a cool day as there isn’t much for shade along the trail. Bring more water than you think. There’s a rangers station down in the valley next to an old burned out house that was built back in the 1930’s but burnt in the 2003 Cedar Fire. I will definitely be back to explore more of the trails in the area.

Awesome hike because there was almost nobody! Lots of rabbits and birds, and wildflowers from yellow to purple. Overall really nice. Started at noon on Saturday so it got quite warm when the sun was out, would recommend starting earlier during summer because there’s no shade. The views from the ridge trail are simply amazing!

Nice hike, lots of flowers near the trailhead at the end of Garden road. Cardiac hill was a moderate incline for a good heart pumping workout. Only saw about 6 other hikers on a Saturday morning! A good alternative to Iron Mtn.

Great long hike that has a variety of views! When you start there are beautiful flowers, then you move into the areas that were burned in the fire awhile back. There’s a lake you’ll pass by, and eventually a ranger station with the remains of a burnt down house. The are areas that are steep, so it’s a good workout but it’s not overly strenuous as a whole.
