The Sunset Trail offers stunning westerly views from Angel Island. Look out towards the Bridge and across the bay to the city. Hike up to the summit of Mt. Livermore at 788' for panoramic views. Angel Island is a grass- and woodland covered mountain island with spectacular views of Marin County, San Francisco and the Golden Gate. Coast Miwok once inhabited the island, and for nearly 100 years from the Civil War to the Cold Wart he federal government used its strategic location for military bases, a quarantine station and an immigration station. Today, trails and roads provide access to the many historic sites, facilities and breathtaking views.

Very fun and mellow trail. Get some decent elevation and distance in with some great views along the way. We finished by rounding the other side of the island and checking out all the old navy base stuff. Good mix of trail hiking and urban exploring!

The hike to the peak of Livermore was about an hour to the top. Getting to the peak where that antenna thingy is tricky. There was a tiny path with a lot of shrubbery, but we got there. Lots of great views even though it was a bit foggy. Bring water, snackage, and a pack. Plan for two optional ferry arrivals and departures. It’s always good to leave extra wiggle time for unexpected traffic, short breaks, and anything else that may come up.

Loved going to Angel Island and hiking! The Sunrise trail is the best way to go to have beautiful views as you climb up. Make sure to go thru the thick brush trail at the top and go to the very top, stand on the picnic table and be amazed at the 360 view!!! Nothing beats that view of San Francisco and the entire bay, all bridges, and more! Our 12, 8 and 6 year kids were mesmerized themselves seeing all the bridges, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. The ferry ride, little beach, sea lions and more were a plus as we waited our return to SF. I also advise to wear layers, pants are important as it is thick brush with thorns in some areas and lots of thistle. With pants it was no big deal for us and kiddos. It was quite windy at the top (mid-June).
