ratings: 5/5 incredible views through out the hike and drive up, 50% shaded, wide fire road, not too crowded but saw a group hike came in a shuttle, easy parking along the side of road (not the reserved lot), 4/5 it's buggy those damn black flies that trails you, underwhelming summit, difficulty is more easy than moderate it's just the distance really, last stretch to peak took shortcut up on right for more leg burn and went down the normal path. easy 3hrs hike or less.
Great views make this an extra special 5 star hike. Moderate hike up a fire trail with a lot of shade with lose rock in sections combined with excellent views of Mount Baldy and surrounding areas at the top. With a ascent of only about 1300 feet, i did this 7.2 mile hike in about 3 hours round trip. Did not have to spend all day get great views as they start right away! That is the bonus of this hike. Only bad thing is the bugs are out and were annoying. Can see other options beyond this hike as the fire road continues and there is an interesting ridge line hike to add distance if you want. Did not do the shortcut.
A few fallen trees across the trail but they were easy to navigate. Otherwise a very straightforward hike.
Good trail for a social hike. Not too challenging and wide enough for conversation.
Fairly wide trail with some fallen branches. Gets gravelly towards the top.
Great hike for beginners. I always say there is no easier way to get classic 360-degree ANF views while barely breaking a sweat. Took some dear friends out for a masked outing, some who don’t hike much. All deemed it super easy. Note the parking lot, which I had thought was public, isn’t. It wasn’t obvious last winter, but now RED “NO PARKING” signs abound. No worries though, plenty of street parking on Glendora Ridge. Snow is gone except for a few tiny ice patches. From a distance, Baldy Bowl looked fairly bare too, except for snow along Devils Backbone.
Super chill hike. You see a few patches of snow but easy to maneuver around. Almost covered with shade the whole way. Not super busy for a Tuesday. Beautiful views
Nice incline, we did not take the short cut. A few fallen trees at the end. I forgot to pause during lunch and we got lost in conversation so we we had to turn back once. Really nice hike!
The ridge route to Sunset Peak is the best route. Steep, but much more pleasant than the road. It's short, but not particularly sweet. Much better in the snow, but nice enough without it. Coming down is steep and loose, arguably harder than going up, but still better than the road.
Awesome. Such a well defined and simple to follow trail. Every time I go here I love it. Not too hard but enough for a great workout.
Trail to Sunset peak and back is fire road with comfortable climb rate all the way. From the peak, we took a longer route back which was very interesting. A little used Trail with a steep scramble in parts. Had to use the map to find the Trail at one point. Made for a great extension to the trip.
First timer doing this trail on 3/21/21. Started at the trailhead at 1140am and went up the fire road the entire way up. This was very easy and there were only about 5-6 20/30ft patches of snow. The snow was nothing though and I was fine in my altra lone peaks. Not enough to make me want to haul poles or spikes. Made it to the top in an 1hr 10mins, had lunch, came back down the ‘sunset peak shortcut’ the whole way. hike time was 2hr and 10mins, total time 3hrs with 1,500elev gain. If you’re doing the shortcut route you’ll definitely want poles and/or shoes with grip. I had both coming down and glad I did since there were a lot of steep parts and loose gravel. Great views at the top!
Accidentally took the short cut which while much shorter is it quite the burner in terms of elevation and can get quite steep.
Awesome trail very went up through ridge line. It was a good challenge for my wife she’s new to hiking.
Patches of snow throughout a good portion of the trail up. Slushy and slippery in some spots. Brought my microspikes, but didn't need to use them.
super fun hike in the snow! definitely a few patches. crampons are a must for a few slippery parts going up the fire road. a service vehicle passed by us like it was no big deal. easy enough to do alone, better with friends! if you stick to the left going up, it's not bad.
