Start at Estero trailhead and hike 2.5 miles until you come to a fork. Follow the sign to the right to the Sunset Beach trail. At this point, you'll have 1.5 more miles until the beach. This trail is a little deceiving in that most places will say it's a 3 mile in and out trail. However, the start of the trail is 2.5 miles into the Estero trail. So you can't actually start your hike at the beginning of the Sunset trail. Therefore, it's technically 7.6 miles in and back out (this milage may very depending on the time of day due to the tides).

Nice relatively flat walk. Our 7 year old made it but was quite tired so I’d rank it 7+ kids wise.

A very hot, though peaceful, hike. No wildlife spotting. Walked around the beach for a bit, since it was low tide — it was okay.

Beautiful hike and - at leas on a Friday afternoon - not very crowded. Saw lots of wildlife - Tule elk, deer, seals, quail, etc. Note that at lower tides you can walk all the way down to the point, though it will add about two miles to the hike (one mile each way); well worth it for the views, the seals, the kelp forests, and the almost perfectly circular boulders shaped by the tides.

Went for a bike ride on this path last week. I had already made the hike on foot to Drakes Beach in previous weeks, so I decided to take my bike this time out and continue on the path to the right, towards Sunset Beach. It was not disappointing. Arrived at low tide, parked my bike and walked along the beach. Plenty of wild life to observe and beautiful scenery. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, layers, and water. Get there early for the solitude.
