Stellar views and a variety of terrain in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. Shaded oak lined trail with excellent views to the north, east & south. Want to see some of the best that Cuyamaca Rancho State Park has to offer? Hike up Stonewall Peak and enjoy the view of the surrounding park and nearby Lake Cuyamaca. The hike up the east side is a popular and relatively easy trail. The elevation gain is about 1000 feet, but doesn't seem like it with lots of switchbacks surrounded by Cuyamaca's characteristic plant and rock scenery and ever-better views. When you reach the top, climb the stairs and behold the breathtaking 360 degree view. When you get your fill, you can go back down the east side, or head down the "back" side, which heads northwest and circles back around. When there's snow, the "back" side is where it lasts the longest, and you can enjoy an easy, meandering descent. This excursion is of gentle switchbacks through canopies of black oaks, sycamores, and other coniferous trees. Great views of Anza Borrego, the Laguna Mountains, (on clear days) the Salton Sea, and 30+ miles to Palomar Mountains are the reward for all who make the ascent.

Great day. My husband and I are in our 60’s so it took us a bit longer than younger hikers. I just had bilateral knee replacement in March so it was helpful to have my trekking poles.

Hike is relatively easy, with switchbacks gradually rising up. The peak is visible for most of the way. The path is rocky, but clean and well defined. A clear day will allow for spectacular 360 degree views, stretching out over several miles. Watch out for bugs, especially in the evening.

Great hike. moderate although much is easy. great views. rock scramble at the end is fun. at the very top lookout area it is swarming with bugs (reminiscent of “The Mummy”). saw hummingbirds, other birds, squirrels along the way.

I wouldn’t say it’s easy but more moderate. Good elevation which will work you but not too hard bc the trail is mostly zig zag. Periodic shade available, trails are rocky but wide enough. Amazing view up top. Worth it.

Stonewall Peak has beautiful views all the way to the top and is a fairly short hike. Great reward for just a little effort. As of July 6, 2019, it's a little overgrown with shrubs in sections, so single file is necessary. This is a great hike for sunset. Bring a headlamp or flashlight and keep an eye out for nocturnal critters on your way down. We saw Jerusalem crickets, scorpions, a Chihuahuan Nightsnake, a California toad and a tarantula.

I live in Julian, so I do this trail often. Beautiful views on the way up of Middle Peak, North Peak and Lake Cuyamaca. If you park at Paso Picacho there is a $10 fee. Most people go up the front side and down the front side. For a more challenging and longer hike (about 10 miles), you can make it a loop and go down the back side which is rockier. You definitely need a map since there would be several other trails to hook up with before returning on Cold Stream Trail. In summer be aware there could be rattlesnakes on the trail.

Awesome easy hike and stunning view at the top but it is very hot because of no shade.
