Stellar views and a variety of terrain in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. Shaded oak lined trail with excellent views to the north, east & south. Want to see some of the best that Cuyamaca Rancho State Park has to offer? Hike up Stonewall Peak and enjoy the view of the surrounding park and nearby Lake Cuyamaca. The hike up the east side is a popular and relatively easy trail. The elevation gain is about 1000 feet, but doesn't seem like it with lots of switchbacks surrounded by Cuyamaca's characteristic plant and rock scenery and ever-better views. When you reach the top, climb the stairs and behold the breathtaking 360 degree view. When you get your fill, you can go back down the east side, or head down the "back" side, which heads northwest and circles back around. When there's snow, the "back" side is where it lasts the longest, and you can enjoy an easy, meandering descent. This excursion is of gentle switchbacks through canopies of black oaks, sycamores, and other coniferous trees. Great views of Anza Borrego, the Laguna Mountains, (on clear days) the Salton Sea, and 30+ miles to Palomar Mountains are the reward for all who make the ascent.

This trail was very fun and didn’t seem very hard at all, it was nice to just hike up and enjoy the crisp air outside. Some spots were a little bit muddy and it was inevitable that you had to walk through it, but 80% was just solid dirt, it took about two hours to hike up there, enjoy some snacks, and hike back down!

This is a fantastic hike the views at the top are beautiful! There is a $10 parking fee but well worth it. The elevation gain is pretty easy. A bit steep at the beginning but then pretty flat the rest of the trail. A bit windy at the top.

Great hike with great views! My 9 year old did a great job making it up to the top. Some muddy areas on the trails. I’m glad I had my hiking poles.

Continuous moderate client. Good trail. Very good training conditions. 1.5 hours up and back. 4 miles round-trip from the campground, which cost 10 bucks to park. 6 miles from cold Creek Trail head down the road, which is free.

A “go to” hike. Great views, moderate climb, great view at the peak. Watch hawks, ravens and turkey vultures “ride” the thermals. My father helped put in the rail at the top with the California Conservation Corps in 1946.

This hike is *4 miles* (not 3.6 as described). The parking area was very busy and the fee was $10. They did have nice park restrooms! The hike up was a mix of mud and packed snow, but was very do-able because of the gentle slopes/many switchbacks. Took us a little over 2 hours including some time at the top. Enjoy!

Fun easy hike made more interesting by the compacted snow and icy trail. We went on Jan 1 to start the year on a “high note” on top of the peak. Started at 9, descended at 10.30. This is a crowded spot, by the time we left the parking lot of the camping area was full. Go early!
