I enjoyed this hike though a good portion is on a fire trail. Cool sights but a bit overgrown on deer trails in a few spots. A few neat spots to stop and take in some views. Star mine is on the loop portion. Would recommend.

We hiked this trail 1/21/19 from the Antioch trailhead. We took Stewartville Trail to the Star Mine Loop trail. It was the day after significant rain but the trail was easily navigable without much mud. We encountered cows, deer, coyote and many birds of prey. We took the side trek to Prospectors Tunnel and went all the way inside to the locked gate. Gorgeous sandstone formations and lots of green. pics added

Very nice wide gravel path most of the way. Once you turn off onto the Star Mine trail, you'll start going up up up. After the ascent to the top, the trail becomes a single track hiking only path. That's OK, however after a week of heavy rain, it was quite mucky and slippery. Plenty of grazing cattle, which our herding dogs were itching to round up (kept on leash). Didn't see coyotes, but another hiker said his two Border Collies got into a chase with a pair the prior week, so he kept his on leash as well.

Decent hike..a lot drier than I had anticipated but normal for this time of year. Not a hike you want to take on a hotter day as there is not a ton of shade to rest along the way

Did see a coyote on this trail. Not as well marked as other trails, but still a nice hike!

I truly enjoyed this beautiful place. We parked off of Frederickson in the parking area. There are no restrooms here, just a heads up. Ascending the Stewartville Trail, then winding left onto the Star Mine Trail at the camp area, you'll walk through the camp parking lot to continue. We went even further to the Oil Canyon Trail at Star Mine's end, to the upper Overlook, which is a fairly steep incline. It was lovely up there with a valley/delta view, but wires (and electrical noises) disrupt the view and sounds. Coming down, we hit the Stewartville Trail back, stopped to add Prospect Tunnel to our hike (+1.5 mi), then back to the parking area. The tunnel is great, you can walk inside, but I recommend a flashlight. There's a great variety of wildlife present throughout the preserve. Today, we spotted two coyotes from a pretty close distance at the summit of Star Mine. From the parking lot and back, with all of the above, we timed at 4 hours exactly.

In my opinion, this is the best trail in Black Diamond Mines. It has a camp ground, a mine, a canyon, trees, a huge sand stone wall (natural amphitheater), a pretty intense climb up sand stone and when you get to the top it has a beautiful view with a bench! 5 stars!
