Split Mountain Via Fish Creek Trail is a 11.5 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Ocotillo Wells, California and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is best used from December until March.
We camped at Fish Creek Campground just off Fish Creek Wash which is just down road from the entrance on Split Mountain Road. From there we hiked up Fish Creek Wash and followed along until we arrived at the Anticline. This is a good photo op at this location. We continued along the wash until we reached the trail head for the Wind Caves. We took a short detour and headed up about a mile to the Wind Caves. We recommend the detour as you'll get great view of the area from there. After enjoying the Wind Caves, we headed back down and continued onto the trail. Shortly you will see a sign about no vehicles and you will also see the Elephant's Knees ahead. Follow this wash along the windy but flat path. Eventually you will start to see sea shells on the ground. These fossils are from the prehistoric sea floor that used to be in this area. The entire hike provides great geologic diversity.
