My favorite hike in the area. Not crowded at all. Saw one beautiful big horn standing on a rock right above me. Great workout with a lot of incline. Some over grown spots but not too bad. Started on the south side and then took a Lyft back to my truck for $7. Highly recommend!

Started from South Trail Head at 7 am on Saturday May 25. Trail was rocky with no shade. Great views from the top. Only wildlife seen were two chipmunks and a hummingbird. First mile quick ascent. Lightly traveled. Hiked down to Tahquitz visitor center to hike Tahquitz Canyon Loop Trail 12.50 per person fee to hike the trail which was beautiful and well maintained. Very busy. About 30 people in the water at bottom of waterfall/pool. Stream crossing. Big horn sheep on mountain side 30 yards from trail. Took Lyft back to car - $8.00. Was about 90 degrees when we finished

Today we did the South Carl Lykken Trail. Started at the southern end of the trail, S Palm Canyon Dr., hiked to the picnic tables, had lunch and returned the same way we hiked. You can continue on down the trail, ends at E Mesquite Ave. We only had the one car so we hiked back the same direction we came, did meet a guy who said he just calls an Uber to take him back to his car or you can walk back on Palm Canyon Dr also. 1st mile of the hike, is a good workout, your typical up hill with a few switch backs. Once you reach the crest you have nice views of South Palm Springs, and the Valley floor, and today was a very clear day. We continue up the trail and to our surprise, saw 5 Big Horn Sheep, all Buck's grazing on the grass just above us, about 50yards. Have hiked this trail a couple times, first encounter with big Horn sheep. Continuing up the trail, we were delighted by the many varieties of wild flowers we and all the barrel cactus on the hillside. This part of the trail is a nice gradual climb, with nice views of Palm Spings. Took us 2 hours to get to the picnic tables, had our lunch, relaxed a bit, and gathered our gear and head back the way we came to our car. It is definitely easier going south than north on this trail, except for that last mile, killer on the knees. The Big Horn Sheep were still their, just resting in the tall glass, watching everyone as they walked by, counted 10-15 varieties of wild flowers. With all the rain we have had, it's going to be a nice wildflower season for sure. It was a nice 4.5-5.0hr hike, just took our time enjoying all their was to see.

Always a great short hike to get your heart pumping! Lots of sheep out on march 1. A great hike right in the city.

First time hiking this trail and really enjoyed it.. The first mile is a little steep then it levels off. Great views of Palm Springs, and trail is really pretty, lots of red barrel cactus and some brittle bush blooming. Perfect weather today.

Done this several times though usually do car or bike shuttle. With shuttle the length is 4.5 mi. December and especially January look for bighorn sheep. I’ve seen them 3 times (out of 9 hikes) at the 2 mi. mark hiking from the south. Have also seen white tailed antelope ground squirrels, a Palm Springs pocket mouse, and lots of birds and reptiles.
