Getting There

This is an incredibly picturesque, mostly shaded canyon hike in the Santa Monica Mountains. The Solstice Canyon Trail is a popular, well-maintained route with some spur-trail opportunities for more adventurous travelers. Some of the highlights include the oldest still-standing stone building in Malibu, a small waterfall and creek, and several ruins - including the ruins of a moderate mansion. From the gate, follow the service road that runs along the right side of the creek. Bear right at the dirt road that takes you up to the 2 odd looking buildings that house the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. To the right of the second building, take the Rising Sun Trail. This trail heads up the ridge, with great views of the ocean, then drops down into the somewhat mysterious Tropical Terrace. This is actually the ruins of a home build in the 1960s, and burned in 1982. There are exotic plants, lovely pools, a 30 foot waterfall (if there has been rain recently), and a hidden statue of the Virgin Mary just before you cross the creek heading into the ruins. This is really a fun place to explore! You can carefully scramble up the rocks on an extremely steep trail to get above the waterfall to a number of lovely pools. The return route is a pleasant shady service road that runs parallel to the stream.

Very small parking lot and minimal parking along the road outside the park...Best bet is to go early in the morning.

While the Solstice Canyon Trail is mostly shaded year-round, the Rising Sun and Sostomo Trails are above the canyon floor and often in the full-sun. If it's hot and sunny out, you may not want to attempt those routes. Parking at the trailhead is free, but limited. Try to get there early if possible.

Head north on Pacific Coast Highway from Malibu Canyon road to Corral Canyon Road and turn right. About a quarter mile up, you will see the gated entrance to Solstice Canyon.

WalkingGreat!

This is a very nice trail. Part of it has pavement, making it an easy walk. Very nice. Went on a Tuesday and there was many people walking even during pandemic event. I would think weekends have much traffic. Some sections have good shade. most has no shade.

Fascinating ruins and beautiful ocean views. Waterfall is less than impressive, but everything else about this trail is quite fun.

The trail was a great workout for me. I would say I am a beginner. I had to take a few breaks on the inclines, but over all great workout :)

This was a great hike. Challenging enough with the incline and direct sun but beautiful and the shade going back was a great reward. Parking is definitely hard, but we just walked from the PCH no problem. It was very busy but most people had masks on and were friendly. Lots of dogs, and I had mine. Would love to go back soon.

Beautiful trail but a lot of people. Going early in the day would probably be less crowded.

Definitely a tough one for a beginning hiker but well worth it! It reminded me of Hawaii (although more dry).

Beautiful hike with some good inclines and pretty views of the ocean. The parking lot is small, so I’d advise trying to get there early unless you want to park on the PCH and hike in. The trail is in great shape and there’s bathrooms and trashcans at the beginning. We went mid-morning and the trail wasn’t terribly crowded. Most folks were good about wearing masks and maintaining a safe distance.

Great!

Fun moderate hike. If you start off on the loop, you can catch a good amount of incline beyond the halfway point with a nice view of the ocean (before going downhill from that point on). Definitely a good hike to get some cardio in.

Enjoyed the creek and ruins, and also saw some wild parrots! Definitely go earlier. We arrived around 11 and had to park down on the PCH, but that honestly doesn’t add too much to the hike.

The parking sucks, and it was a bit crowded. That's expected with a Sunday morning hike though. The trail itself was a nice hike with a lot of dope views

This was a pretty trail. I arrived at 11am on year’s day. I found parking easily but the parking lot was full upon arrival. All trails suggests taking Sunrise trail to start. I am a fit hiker and it was ja bit steep to start to overall manageable. The ruins and the waterfall are cool. I skipped the Sostomo trail because I was too tired but I look forward to going back. When I left at 12:45 the parking lot was jammed and there was a line about 8 cars deep waiting to park. Arrive before 11am on new year’s day. Bring a mask because it is popular and water because the fountains dont work. Januarys is a great time to hike because the weather is cool
