Five stars for the solitude the trail provides! Meanders through some lush second growth areas. Encountered barely 10 hikers along the 8+ mile hike on a Saturday! The initial ascent maybe hard if you do not warm up before the hike, otherwise it is fairly manageable with relatively flat or gradual ascents.

NOTE: As of 2nd Jun '17, access to Slate Creek trail via the Old Tree trail is closed due to trail damage or something. You can access Slate Creek trail by walking through the campground to Upper Escape Road and taking an alternate trail that shoots off to the right just past the gate with two steps leading to the right. This detour does not add much to the distance or difficulty level according to me. Another alternative is through the summit trail off the park road which I did not take.
