Great walk starting in Berkeley! Made it a loop by taking side-o trail and the fire trails. Really pretty out. Nice incline to start the climb.

NO trail markers, and lots of different paths. Very easy to get off trail. But nice walk, climb, scramble. Definitely moderate, on the hard side. Warm in October midday. I’ll do it again earlier in the day.

Hiking

Started at parking off of Claremont Ave and immediately started up a steep, overgrown hill. The trail was kind of slippery because there was a lot of fog and moisture. Pretty quickly we came to a clearing with trails going off in all directions - since they all interconnected, we wen to the left which stayed fairly level at first and then suddenly dropped very steeply downhill. We cut through the bush on a small deer trail and dropped down onto the Upper Jordan Fire Trail which was a wide fire road with very little slope. It meandered around and mostly stayed at the same elevation until we reached the fork. The original plan was to go uphill and circle around on the trail following Grizzly Peak Blvd, but the trail was too narrow and overgrown so we doubled back. Took a short-cut and ended up back at the big clearing, then got confused and started walking down the same trail we had previously walked on before I started recognizing things we'd seen earlier. Turned around, made it back to the clearing and turned right, which led back down the hill to the car. A good hike on a very foggy morning! Oh, and we saw at least 6 little brown bunnies in the first 1/2 mile fro mthe car!

Flowers blooming, so pretty! Nice mix of sun and shade, uphill, downhill, and flat. Not too crowded on a Sunday. Watch out for poison oak!
