At first we thought this would just be a leisurely stroll - the Shirland Loop trail is listed as moderate and just under 3 miles. However, we decided to park at the top, walk down the road to the fire access road and begin our journey there. We combined our initial trail with a detour to the river and then returned back up on Cardiac Trail. It’s a very beautiful and scenic set of trails, but the river - wow, that was amazing!! The views from up above and down at river level are fantastic. The water is very clear and cold, but it’s great to stop, have a snack and wade in it - cools you right off! On the return, we took Cardiac trail, which is true to its name (the sign says it all - lol). We’re in pretty good shape, but this trail will will have your heart and lungs....and quads really pumping! I don’t recommend this part for the “faint of heart”, but there is road access nearly all the way to river and I highly recommend visiting - however you get down there. All in, the trails we took combined were about 5 miles.
