Sentinel Dome starts from Glacier Point Road and scales one of Yosemite's high domes and offers a full breathtaking 360 degree view. It provides one of the very best NP experiences for the effort you can find. To the west, you'll see almost a reverse Tunnel View of the Yosemite Valley and can see beyond to the Merced River canyon. To the north is Yosemite Valley, including El Capitan and Yosemite Falls. You'll see Nevada Falls, Half Dome and Clouds Rest to the east, and many of the High Sierra peaks. This summit was made famous by Ansel Adam's 1940 photo of the Jeffrey Pine tree. The tree perished in 1977, and fell over in 2003. The trail crosses a bridge over a stream near the beginning of the hike and gradually slopes up along a granite floor among the pines. It then turns slightly left and after a gradual climb through more pines, meets the base of the dome, where you then take a sharp left straight up onto the exposed dome. Enjoy the views! An alternate route begins at the service road entrance about a half mile towards Glacier Point from the main trailhead. This spur joins the main trail at the base of the dome and is about two thirds of a mile.

A great hike, reasonably short but steep. The views are stunning. My favorite spot in Yosemite. In Oct 2017 I hiked with my girlfriend and proposed at the top. She said yes! 2 years later, we did the same my family and we watched as another couple became engaged at the summit!

An amazing hike with a little climb to the top. Climbing to the top rewards you with stunning views of El Cap and Half Dome. Our 5 and 12 year olds loved the view from the top. We went on to Taft Point, recommend it as well.

Do this trail! It has one of the best views of the valley, you amazing views of half dome and El Capitan. It’s just over 2 miles round trip (1.1 miles out and the same back) and it makes you feel like you’ve earned the view without being as challenging as say Nevada falls. It’s pretty easy most of the way, but the last 0.2 miles is a nice challenge to the top of Sentinel Dome, but worth it. Best value for your time and effort. Like all hikes, go early to avoid the crowds. This is a must do for all.

Gorgeous views, absolutely a must do in the area. Save your time and skip Taft Point. This trail gives you the same views but at a higher elevation and much better vantage point. El Cap and Half Dome easily visible from top.

Amazing hike. We left from Glacier Point which added a little more to the climb but it was perfect. The final climb to the peak was definitely tough but worth it. Views at the top were unparalleled. I would highly recommend doing this one.

Great family friendly hike. The end of it does walk up the dome and is fairly steep. I’m not sure how little kids would do, but it’s not dangerous. Just steep. It’s a short hike that offers spectacular 360 degree views. We did this on our rest/recovery day after half dome and it was just enough.

Took this hike on the afternoon of 10/14, with the sun out and the temperature around 60 with the wind blowing. After just two miles I had just taken in some of the most renown sights in Yosemite in Half Dome and El Capitan! What a great panoramic view from up on top of Sentinel! I’d suggest this for a quick up and back and potentially for younger or inexperienced hikers looking for some adventure and take in some great views.

Highly Recommend! This hike is the biggest bang for your buck. The 360 degree views you get for a little over 2 mi of hiking are incredible. We hiked this 10/17, and the smoke/clouds made the view pretty hazy in the distance. Even so, worthwhile. On a clear day, I don’t think there would be a better view in the entire park. If you’ve been to glacier point, this is even better. There’s a large marker on the top that points out what you’re looking at in each direction. Overall, with the exception of the final climb up the dome, this trail seemed pretty obvious on where to follow. There’s one short, rocky portion on the side of a hill where you’ll want to be more careful to not trip or roll an ankle. Nothing unavoidable if you walk slowly. The last 0.1 mi is climbing straight up the dome. Roughly 125 ft or so. The dome is really big on top. Just choose the safest way up and back down. There’s no particular path. We went around 5 pm, and it started to get a bit chilly and windy, particularly up top.

I agree that this is the perfect trail if you're only going to be in Yosemite for 1 day! I took off 1 star because the trail wasn't clearly marked the whole way. Also there was one part in the middle of the hike where you have to walk on a steep slope made of large rocks. My friends rolled her ankle a few times trying to navigate that part of the trail.

If you do one hike in Yosemite make sure it’s this one......360 degrees of the entire Yosemite Valley! Most folks can do it! Last 1/4 mile is a bit steep but not crazy. Do this hike to get a full appreciation of the park!

The biggest bang for your buck in Yosemite. A short, easy trail with incredible views of the Yosemite Valley on one side and El Capitan on the other. We did this hike early in the morning (just after sunrise) to avoid crowds, but due to the way the light hits the valley you will probably get better pictures if you complete this a little later in the day.

Incredible 360 views of Yosemite Valley (El Cap, Yosemite Falls (although dry on our visit), Half Dome, Nevada Falls and beyond) from the top of Sentinel Dome! Relatively easy hike from the trailhead though worth noting that the the hike starts at 7,500+ feet so if this is the first thing you do in Yosemite you may want to take it slow to acclimate to the altitude. A bit of scrambling over rocks and to climb the dome itself but nothing that difficult. Not at all shaded and we found it to be quite dry so bring plenty of water to avoid dehydration from the altitude and the sun. From our parking which was just beyond the trailhead entrance and back was ~2.5 miles and took 1:30 hours which included 20+ plus mins at the top taking in the glory of Yosemite from what had to be one of the best vantage points!!

Absolute a must do hike! I did the loop coming from Taft point taking the Pohono trail around to Sential Dome. The views of the valley on this trail are fantastic! It’s more of a moderate trail with a few switch backs but it’s well worth it!

Simply a great hike. It only takes around 30-45 minutes to the top and only the last five-or-so minutes are a bit challenging (though nothing too wild). The views are phenomenal. And surprisingly, when I did it in early September in the late afternoon, it wasn't crowded at all either.

Loved it! Easy, comfortable path and great sense of achievement once you get to the top. Going up Sentinel Dome will certainly raise your heartbeat but I felt quite safe, the rocks are quite steep but providing good grip. The views were absolutely amazing!

Challenging trail with some elevation but the views of El Capitan and Half Dome along with the rest of the park are incredible. Getting to the top is way worth it.
