Sentinel Dome starts from Glacier Point Road and scales one of Yosemite's high domes and offers a full breathtaking 360 degree view. It provides one of the very best NP experiences for the effort you can find. To the west, you'll see almost a reverse Tunnel View of the Yosemite Valley and can see beyond to the Merced River canyon. To the north is Yosemite Valley, including El Capitan and Yosemite Falls. You'll see Nevada Falls, Half Dome and Clouds Rest to the east, and many of the High Sierra peaks. This summit was made famous by Ansel Adam's 1940 photo of the Jeffrey Pine tree. The tree perished in 1977, and fell over in 2003. The trail crosses a bridge over a stream near the beginning of the hike and gradually slopes up along a granite floor among the pines. It then turns slightly left and after a gradual climb through more pines, meets the base of the dome, where you then take a sharp left straight up onto the exposed dome. Enjoy the views! An alternate route begins at the service road entrance about a half mile towards Glacier Point from the main trailhead. This spur joins the main trail at the base of the dome and is about two thirds of a mile.

This was a perfect easy hike! We were not staying in Yosemite so we drove far (3 hours) to go on this short hike. It was worth every minute! We hiked it and were able to see a view of the major places we hoped to go to....El Cap, Half Dome, Yosemite Falls and more. It was beautiful. There were other people there but wasn’t so crowded that it took away from anything. We decided to walk further so we went out to Glacier Falls from here. We didn’t know what to expect but didn’t see anyone as we hiked and then all of a sudden we got to Glacier Falls and it was full of tourists and a gift shop. It didn’t take away from anything but important to know.

The way is not difficult as it looks like, don’t scare about its appearance.

A short hike, minimal effort for some of the most amazing views of Yosemite.

Beautiful trail with panoramic view of the valley! A little bit challenging four people who don’t have good exercise tolerance, combined with the altitude. Absolutely worth it! My only suggestion is to get there early in order to beat the crowds with regard to finding parking.

Very crowded at the regular parking spot, highly recommend parking at the “short cut” about a half a mile down the road on the right, across from the service road gates to the left. Nobody parked there. Took the service road right up to the top. Much shorter and saved a lot of time.

The views are fantastic, and you can avoid the stopped traffic at Glacier Point. Looks deceptively steep as you approach the dome, but it is a relatively easy trip to the top. This area is worth visiting from the valley. Don’t miss it!

Thank you to whoever said this has better views than glacier point will give you! So true! Easy hike, with a little steepness to the top of the dome. Best 360 view of the valley from here and you won’t have the crowd or traffic of going down to glacier.

Beautiful 360 degree views from the top of the valleys, half dome and El Cap. Even at the height of the summer season we ran into very few other hikers. Very peaceful.

Amazing view of all Yosemite..: see El Cap, Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, and Nevada Falls, As well as all the mountains in the background. Short easy hike we did with my husband and 8 and 10 year old. Park at the trail head, not Glacier Point.

The view is breathtaking. Once you hike this trail, no need to go to Glacier point.

July 20, 2019. Good hike. I started it from Glacier Point and it was a good 3 mile round trip hike. Going up is a steady incline and once you get to the dome the incline get steeper. Super fun, greats views of El Cap, Half Done, Three Brothers, and Yosemite Falls.

We did this hike with our 8 y/o and he had no issues with it. I would recommend picking up the trailhead at sentinel dome and hiking the 1.1mi there and then looping back around to Taft point. It is a moderate 4.5-5 mile hike that offers two completely views of the park.

A must hike trail while in Yosemite! short easy hike from Glacier Point (if you can get a parking spot). Unforgettable views anytime of day of the entire park. I was very surprised to not see more people at the top.

Fairly easy hike with an incline at the end. Not many people compared to Glacier Point. Incredible 360 views of all the famous points of the surrounding Yosemite Valley area. You'll see El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls, lots of back country peaks. We went close to sunset and it was unforgettable. This is a must do.

I did four mile hike to glacier point and sentinel done hikes. It is a great hike and has amazing views of Yosemite icons. Not too crowded and enough challenge but the rewards are great with the views. Sentinel dome to Glacier point was a easy hike so I recommend that for families.

This was our first trail and hike upon arrival to Yosemite in the early evening. We stayed until the sunset... amazing! It’s a gradual incline with rocky terrain toward the end. Highly recommend for some amazing panoramic views of the valley!

Snow is gone and views are amazing. We had a 10, 13, and 15 year old and they hiked it with no problem.

Amazing views!! Fairly easy hike except for the last 200 feet or so up the backside of the Dome. View at the top is easily worth the effort. 360° views of Half Dome, El Capitan, and a couple waterfalls. Makes for a beautiful place to watch the sunset, which my friends and I did. Very picturesque views of the whole park. Parking can be full, but there are places along the road at which you could park. Single bathroom at trailhead. Can be cold and windy at top, especially past sundown. Flashlight is advised past sundown as well due to the steep climb down and loose rock. Drink plenty of water and wear good tennis shoes or hiking boots. it's a view that I would definitely go back and see again and again.
