Hello fellow trailers, this specific trail is closed, not sure when it will reopen. We had to drive 1.5 miles further west to another parking lot. This was the Sylvan Meadows Trail which is approximately 2.7 miles. Very flat, lots of dog/horse poop and very sunny once the clouds roll out. There is also a $4 donation fee. There was a ranger at the entrance if you have any other questions.

One of my favorites. Kid friendly and average difficulty. Vernal Pool hike nearby is great after rain also.

I would recommend doing this early morning if you’re doing this in summer. Not much shade during midday. We started at 7am and did a 9 mile loop taking us through the vernal pools which were just grassy because no water in summer. It’s a pretty easy trek so if you’re beginner it’s a great start. Maps at the visitor center.

Running

Did this loop as a trail run today. It's a really good loop, but I wish it was more single track. More then half of the loop is obviously plowed and groomed by a tractor. I much prefer trails that are inaccessible by vehicle, as it's a far more intimate and engaging experience. Despite the mostly fire road trail, the scenary is beautiful and has awesome views of fields, meadows, rolling hills, and plateaus. Also, the 360 view from Monument Peak is pretty freakin awesome!

Awesome trail, great opportunities to see wildlife. Certain parts of the trail got resurfaced and it makes it a bit difficult to run on, other than that the trails are great for running/hiking

Absolutely breath taking. I particularly loved the sound of the creek and the high hills to the North. I definitely recommend this trail to anybody looking for an easy day hike.

Hiking

Started off @ 8, headed to the Vernal Pool then strung several outlier trails together for a 14 mile loop through reserve. Finished up by 3. Fields, hills, and meadows were several shades of lush green, peppered with vibrant colors of various wild flowers. Weather was perfect, warm with a constant cool breeze. Beautiful early spring hike.

Pleasant hike with some nice views. Absolutely strict rangers that yelled at us, twice, for being literally one foot off the trail (that was muddy). Fully understand “leave only footprints” and protecting our environment but the rangers were not friendly or reasonable especially when miles of trail were muddy and rocky.

Nice loop trail with great views. I hiked this on a Tuesday and saw only 3 other hikers. I saw several tarantulas. Not a lot of shade so early starts are best. You'll be hiking in direct sun most of the time. Best times are late Oct to spring. Great views from Monument hill, take to short trip to the summit.
