San Simeon Loop and North Moonstone Beach is a 4.6 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Cambria, California that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round.
It was decent hike, not challenging for us but there are benches almost every 250 steps or so up near the camp grounds. I didn’t take many pictures but liked the different landscapes we were able to hike through.
This trail has a little bit of everything! We enjoyed this for an easy Sunday morning walk. You’ll need to check the tide for the beach portion
Beach was beautiful. Hide tide and recent storm brought in a lot of debris. Inland hike had many beautiful elements and a lot of biodiversity. Although some areas were fairly unremarkable (like walking the property line of a $60 million private estate)
Overall excellent, although important to note that if you are following the AllTrails map you will have to cross the Hwy 1 which was a bit precarious. Overall highly recommend and would do again.
Peasant trail with a constant breeze from the beach. Would definitely trail run on this path
This trail was something else. First of all, the GPS via Google maps takes you to the parking lot just north of the creek that runs under the highway. So logically one would think that the trailhead starts in the northern campground, right? Wrong! I spent 15 minutes looking all around that campground for the trail head until I finally gave up and walked back across the bridge to the day use area where the San Simeon Trail actually starts. My advice to anyone who wants to do this hike is to just do the San Simeon Trail to Washburn Campground instead. It is pretty much the exact same hike, but without the hassle of having to cross the creek to get to the trail head in the beginning and without all that nonsense on the south end via the northern Moonstone Beach picnic area. The view at the bluff down there is nice, but you can see that via your car by going to the parking lot down there anyways. it isn’t worth the hassle. But the rest of the San Simeon Trail is a really nice hike. There is a little bit of poison ivy here and there but you can avoid it for the most part. And I like the wooden bridges and the many wooden benches spaced around the trail every few hundred yards.
Very kid friendly, lots of families and dogs out. Watch for a little poison oak. we made the mistake of thinking the trail continued thru the cow pasture to the main road instead of going back down to the beach, which caused us to backtrack. Worth the drive for sure.
