Fun trail but definitely not moderate MOST OF THE TRAIL. It’s a very easy trail overall, with the only semi-difficult section being the optional detour up to the lookout. One of the guys in my group had a bone stock Tacoma TRD and had nothing to even think about. Meeting Tony in the lookout was a blast so I definitely recommend taking that detour! However, the side trail to the top of the lookout would probably be rated moderate and is pretty steep. The lookout staff use a full size 4x4 pick with mud terrain tires to get to the top to give you an idea of what will make it. Tony was great and taught me all about the tools and techniques lookouts use to spot and report fires. Lots of fun and I’d love to take family back sometime.

Great drive not sure why it’s rated as moderate I would think a stock Jeep would have no issues. The road get a little narrow at times and if someone is coming down in the tight spots it’s a little hairy if your on the outside but the view is incredible and we got to meet Tony the lookout he was great

Great off road trip with RIOT OFF ROAD. started in Downieville and made are way to the top of saddle back lookout. After having lunch we continued down the mountain into poker flat. After poker flat we made our way back up and over to Howland Flat where there is plenty of sightseeing. The trail we took from poker to howland is a little more aggressive and I would recommend high clearance 4wd to make it up and over. Plenty of rocks to keep you busy as you make the climb. After howland we made our way out to La Port road and there is a nice rest area just down the hill 5 mins or less to air up and use the restrooms.

The gravel road is easy to find and not too hard. It will take you to a gate that when I went was closed and locked. We hiked up the last mile or so and found snow still even in late June. Great views at the top!! The out looks was getting a little run down but still worth the adventure

Easy trail to frive and lots of great views. If you continue to Poker Flat and then to La Porte then you will have the oppertunity to see some Ghost towns.
