Not too busy with some bikers. Didn’t continue due to low visibility and knowing of the homeless situation near Richards.

Walking

the section parallel to the 5 was mostly a bike trail with some room to go off the path. I wandered through Old Sac, where there are some nice bathrooms. Once you cross under the 5 though, that's when it is mostly encampmemts and I kept going. there was no light to cross 160 so I went under the bridge and treaded lightly so as not to disturb the residents. needless to say I didn't feel comfortable turning around and doing it again so I walked through town to get back to my car. I should've paid the four hour parking, not the 8 ($6) but oh well. I thought I might have stamina to go to the capitol but I was wearing converse, so my bad.

A lot of homeless and garbage. Saw lots of syringes. Some parts very smelly.

It’s shameful that the city doesn’t manage this area. Garbage and homeless leave a bad odor. Definitely don’t go past Old Sac as it gets sketchier. This could really be a nice area.

The section from Jibbons St to the Tower Bridge is nice. DO NOT attempt the section from I-5 to 16th St. The trash from homeless people living under the interstate bridge was literally blocking the eastbound lane. There were 2 people who shouted obscenities at me. And I passed a group involved in a heated argument about drugs that hadn't been paid for.

I'm not sure if I was to give a review on some of your hoods if you guys would have the the perfect landscaping or the cleanest people either,I bet my life on it half of those homeless people out there didn't get what they wanted either but it a spot for them to rest and image them going to your hood I bet you guys wouldn't be very happy with them either. One thing I know is I'm not homeless but I know a few of them and most of them watch out for each other like family and not all of them dreamed of being homeless but this world we live in today is not very kind to most of us and instead of avoiding them try asking them there story I bet they had a home once and family without being outcast. They are people just the same as you but for whatever reason there home is the ground or tent and that's there hood aka home. To them it's a place to be and call home and to you it's disappointment and dirty but walk a week in there shoes bet you won't smell like roses

Aaron is right. Homeless a serious problem here and along lower American River Bike trail. I have been threatened. Homeless population has gone up 35% during administration of current mayor.

I don’t know if I’d ever run on this trail. It seemed more like a cool boardwalk to check out the river and old Sac. Fun either way though.

It is a nice walk from Miller Park to Old Sac but I wouldn't recommend going past the old sac part of the trail. That part of the trail takes you through about 1.5 miles of the homeless camps. Lots of garbage along the trail. Agree with other reviews that commented that fair oaks is a better option if trying to walk near the river.

I would recommend parking near Matsui Park. You can then choose to run north through Discovery Park or head south and you'll reach Old Sac in less then a mile. Old Sac itself has asphalt, dirt, cobblestone streets and wooden deck. Relatively small area about 6 or 7 city blocks. Super duper crowded on weekends and midday weekdays. Light crowds early morning. If you run past Old Sac heading south you'll have an asphalt trail following the Sacramento River towards Land Park. Mostly sunny.

Running

For context I started at capital mall Blvd and ran 3 miles north and then back Ina Sunday at 9am. I really liked the trail and am surprised about the negative reviews from a few years ago. The downside was that for about a mile or less of the trail I was about 100 yards or less from the highway. But other than that the river front run was nice. I saw less than five homeless people or trail side tents so not sure if that is a different area. The road wasn't that congested - never more than 5 people around me and usually at least one person within view (if safety is a concern)

C'mon! It's not that bad. Yes there are homeless people, yes it's kind of dirty. It's a city! Don't go here expecting pristine wilderness, it's a 1000' from downtown. It's a beautiful area connecting discovery park with old sac. It's also quite busy (and safe!) on the weekends in the summer with joggers, bikers, etc.

What Aaron wrote is entirly true, this is a terriable area of the river. You should try further up toward fair oaks or Carmichael. Try the red brdige in old fair oaks. As a local i went there a lot to enjoy the river. It has bike trails that lead all the way to downtown.

First to Review

I'd give this a negative star rating is that we're an option. The walk could have been ok if it weren't for the dozens and dozens of homeless people camped out at the lake doing drugs and drinking making the place stink. We tried going along side the trail and got a mouth full of exhaust the whole way back. DON'T GO HERE.
