walked it counterclockwise and made the extra .3 to round valley Ranger Station. returned and continued the loop counterclockwise. second half has more forrest and less rock, some of the down hill area was slick where it traversed over the rocks, but manageable it you take your time. the two desert view areas we wanted to see were closed it appears to a recent fire. the climb up the paved path to the tram was actually the most strenuous part.

We hiked a 3/4 mile out and back in April. We wanted to hike to Wellman's Divide but the Rangers said it was too dangerous without the right equipment. Th hike was still well worth it. The tall pines, rocks and glowing streams were peaceful and a nice break from the desert heat below. We also hiked Desert View while on San Jacinto which was spectacular! San Jacinto is a must when your in the area.

First portion is moderate with gorgeous surroundings. Once you make it to the second ranger station on the last leg to wellmans it picks up substantially, climbing about 500ft for the last mile.
Bring snacks and water, and November is cold! Keep all of that in mind. Beautiful views from the top. See from the desert to idyllwild and across..

We wanted to hike to the peak but we got a late start. The ranger recommended this as the second best hike. He didn't steer us wrong. With more than 1000 ft of elevation gain taking us to 9700ft. The views were amazing. From the desert floor all the way to the Pacific. Great hike!
