Park Features: Not many Bay Area residents know that they have a volcano nearby but Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve is home to one! This volcano, Round Top, dates to about 10 million years ago and is the source of all the volcanic rock in the park. The unstaffed visitor center provides a thorough geological history of the park through display panels and specimens. Trails Highlights: The trail starts out in a forested understory, then opens into rolling grassland hills, and nally concludes on the shaded Skyline Trail, bringing you back to the staging area. Round Top Trail offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills, valleys, and cities far below. The Volcanic Trail is lined with different types of volcanic rock that help tell the story of the formation of the landscape and how it has changed over time. Pick up a park brochure before you begin your hike to learn more. Trail Directions: Park at the Sibley Staging Area and walk up towards the visitor center. Start on the paved Overlook Trail to the left of the visitor center and continue past the interpretive panels. Go past the trail post to the Backpack Camp, and at the next trail post, make a left and immediately at the next trail post bear left on the Round Top Loop Trail. Follow the directions for Volcanic Trail, staying on the gravel trail and continuing through the gate. In .4 miles, make a left at the fork onto Volcanic Trail. You will immediately pass a lookout bench and trail post #3. At the next fork, make a right on the trail that heads uphill; here there is a trail post marked #5-11. Stay to the left at the next fork and follow the Volcanic Trail until it meets with the paved Quarry Road; turn left onto Quarry Road. Stay on Quarry Road as it descends nearly .6 miles to the gate. Stay left and immediately make another left through another gate to access Skyline Trail. Skyline Trail will take you back to the Sibley Staging Area, climbing somewhat steeply along the creek as you cover .87 miles. Park Hours: 7am to 6pm Nov-Feb; 7am to 10pm Mar-Oct Fees: No fees

The trail was nice but some parts of it are closed due to the storm/erosion. It took us forever to get out fo the trail because we've been going out of the trail because of the nice view. It's fun especially when it's sunset.

It is a good trail for running the first couple of miles but then the incline is way to steep to run up, but very beautiful

fairly easy trail if you're looking for a challenge, go clockwise. I went counter clockwise and the last bit of incline gave me a workout which I really liked. muddy parts in some areas

Trail was enjoyable. Heavy traffic in certain areas and muddy in others due to recent rain. More inclines than expected and climate can also change from area to area, so prepare as necessary.

HikingMuddy

Arrived around 9am on a Saturday morning and there were sleet a number of people on the parking lot. Went clockwise descending in the woods. The trail was pretty muddy, but definitely passable as a hiker with poles - not sure how the runners were managing as some parts were very slippery and quite steep. Quarry Road is exactly what it says - a wide, paved road heading up the side of the hills. We saw the most people here, but pretty much everyone was wearing masks and there was lots of room to social distance. Views are beautiful and everything is really lush and green right now. So many happy dogs, on an off leash. Overall a good, pretty quick loop to get the heart pumping.

Not a lot of shade but the weather was perfect so it wasn’t as bad. Lots of bikers like everyone said but only encountered them at few areas. There’s a parking lot albeit small so it gets full fast.

Fun, easier moderate. 4 mile loop. When you need a dog and kid friendly, mostly wide loop and you are cool nerding out on geology. Recommend counterclockwise on loop, shorter and harder up at the end but shaded. Lots of side trail options to improve sweeping views of San Fran or the East Bay. — at Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve.

It was so beautiful, 70 degree day with trail mostly shaded. A good mix of up, down and flat. I intended to do an entirely different trail, but I started at the wrong staging area and thought I was at right one, so I followed the general shape of the intended trail, even though it wasn’t right at all. I ended up at another parking lot- the correct one and there was no shorter way than to double back the same way I came. Thank goodness I was recording the walk and could follow my blue dot back through my red line trail. Unexpected extra 3 miles but it was lovely!!

Large sections very exposed so bring hat and sunscreen, and extra water for your dogs. Off leash allowed in sections as long as you have good voice control/recall. Beautiful hike in the morning with great visibility to SF and Diablo to the East.
