Park Features: Not many Bay Area residents know that they have a volcano nearby but Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve is home to one! This volcano, Round Top, dates to about 10 million years ago and is the source of all the volcanic rock in the park. The unstaffed visitor center provides a thorough geological history of the park through display panels and specimens. Trails Highlights: The trail starts out in a forested understory, then opens into rolling grassland hills, and nally concludes on the shaded Skyline Trail, bringing you back to the staging area. Round Top Trail offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills, valleys, and cities far below. The Volcanic Trail is lined with different types of volcanic rock that help tell the story of the formation of the landscape and how it has changed over time. Pick up a park brochure before you begin your hike to learn more. Trail Directions: Park at the Sibley Staging Area and walk up towards the visitor center. Start on the paved Overlook Trail to the left of the visitor center and continue past the interpretive panels. Go past the trail post to the Backpack Camp, and at the next trail post, make a left and immediately at the next trail post bear left on the Round Top Loop Trail. Follow the directions for Volcanic Trail, staying on the gravel trail and continuing through the gate. In .4 miles, make a left at the fork onto Volcanic Trail. You will immediately pass a lookout bench and trail post #3. At the next fork, make a right on the trail that heads uphill; here there is a trail post marked #5-11. Stay to the left at the next fork and follow the Volcanic Trail until it meets with the paved Quarry Road; turn left onto Quarry Road. Stay on Quarry Road as it descends nearly .6 miles to the gate. Stay left and immediately make another left through another gate to access Skyline Trail. Skyline Trail will take you back to the Sibley Staging Area, climbing somewhat steeply along the creek as you cover .87 miles. Park Hours: 7am to 6pm Nov-Feb; 7am to 10pm Mar-Oct Fees: No fees

This trail appeared shorter than advertised. The start of the trail is not well marked so it’s difficult to find the trailhead although once underway all other intersecting trails were readily identifiable. The flush toilets at the parking area were a definite plus. I would rate this trail as easy and not moderate.

It's a good beginner trail. Some good views.

Enjoyed this. Great place to take the dog. They are allowed off the leash. Will definitely be coming back.

Tried to do this loop on July 4 and the first section of the trail is currently closed due to “dangerous tree conditions” - hiked the half that was still open and it was nice.

Mostly very wide, exposed trails. Views are mostly nice... mostly of the valley, but some look out over the hills. Round Top Loop is mostly shaded and good for a short hike.

Good length and degree of difficulty. Nice variation in terrain.

This area isn't bad, but it's also not great. I think if you live in this area, this is a nice place to go when you want to get out and don't have a lot of time. I'm a bit further out, so I doubt I'll be back. The trails are okay, pretty moderately trafficked. You'll see hikers, bikers, and a good number of dogs (that are of leash). The views at the top along Volcanic Trail are also okay - they're a nice little bonus if you're just out here for the activity, but I wouldn't count them as a draw to come here.

Biggest issue: very limited parking.

Beautiful hike! Took Top Loop to Volcanic loop, with a detour to the frog ponds. Been seeing some rain so everything was a beautiful green with the yellow tree blossoms. Mostly flat with some fun scrambles up steep hillsides for some stellar views!

Just did this hike today; it was the perfect length for a nice Sunday stroll. I highly recommend doing it while the hills are green and lush from the winter rain (see the pics I uploaded). Don't wear nice sneakers if it just rained though; they will get muddy!

Beautiful country side. Mostly open trails, not paved. Everyone is in a great mood, even the dogs are friendly.

Fun, easy hike. A little bit of an incline at the end that makes it more fun! Partially paved, mostly gravel. On a hot day wear a hat!

This is a nice local hike that allows dogs off-leash. There's minimal to no cover, so wear sunblock and bring a hat. Also, because of the cows you will more than likely encounter your fair share of pies and flies. I would recommend this trail if you're looking for a good spot to run your pup. It is best hiked in the winter/spring months when the fields are lush and you don't have to worry about the heat.

Good, solid hike. We did 3 of 4 summits, enjoyed the wildflowers. The views are nice but nothing breathtaking.

One of my favorite spots for a quick hike. Easy to get to and great fun for the Pup. Gets really busy on the weekends but it's well maintained. If your dog is a little weird with cattle you might want to keep them on a leash, as there are free roaming cows throughout the area.

Decent amount of people and unleashed dog. Very pretty though, a few longer trail options. Once it rains I bet it's very cool along the little river bed.

Fantastic course. Saw the labyrinth, beautiful eastern views, then from desert down into the thicket of the forest. Saw lava rocks. Excellent.

Hot Hot Hot! Trails are not marked very well; I ended up going to far down and had to walk up a steep road with the dogs that seemed to never end. We got our exercise fersure but bring lots of water; I almost fainted. Better fall or spring trail.

If you get off the main loop, there are lots of nice surprises like labyrinths and hobbit forests. Easy hike but lots of variety.
