Rim Trail: Short Version is a 3.4 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near La Canada Flintridge, California that offers the chance to see wildlife and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and trail running. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

we just walked around for a while and looked at observatory stuff. didn't actually do much of the trail, but still had a good time.

I did this route but continued to Newcomb Peak (9 miles round trip). The views at the peak aren't really worth the effort, unless you're a peak bagger and want to cross it off your list (like myself). Check my recording if you're curious. If you want to do more than 3.4 miles (as shown on this page) but don't feel like hitting the Newcomb Peak, you could hike to Newcomb Pass (7.2 miles roundtrip). With shade and picnic benches, it's a nice place to have lunch or a snack.
