Tips

As of August 2020, this park is currently closed due to wildfire until further notice. See here for more info: https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=30009 See some of the world's tallest trees along this easy, well-maintained hiking trail. A great hike for young kids. The Redwood Trail at Big Basin Redwoods State Park loop offers easy access to some of the tallest and oldest Redwoods anywhere. The fact that the trail is flat and well-maintained, combined with the well-marked attractions along the way make this a perfect hike for families with young children. The main attractions along this trail are Father of the Forest (known for its wide circumference), Mother of the Forest (the tallest tree in Big Basin) and The Chimney Tree (whose hollow trunk offers a spectacular view up into the sky).

* Entrance fee at Big Basin is $10 per vehicle * There are several benches spread out along this loop. Bring picnic and take breaks at your leisure. * During Summer and Fall, when the trail is dry, there is no need to wear hiking boots. Running / tennis shoes will do the job for you

We love this easy stroll through 10 little stops that displayed some of the largest and oldest redwood trees. The Mother of the forest is 1500+ years old. Pretty cool. Definitely a must see in Big Basin.

Walking

Absolutely beautiful trail. Easy and short, but the towering Redwoods are beautiful and majestic. There's a spirituality about this place that demands reverance. We loved it. It was raining most of the time we were in the park and we'd planned to do some of the other hikes, but we were blessed to walk this one during a lull in the weather.

Great trail for learning about the redwoods. The brochures were super informative and nicer than having obtrusive signs at every turn marking important trees. Got engaged on this little trail!

Easy informative trail close to the parking lot. Can do this one with kids, or at the end of a longer trail to end the day.

Great trail with a waterfall reward at the end. You can't get in the waterfall, which was the only bummer. I'd love to come back and spend a full day hiking in Big Basin!

Super short and easy trail. Grab a paper pamphlet on your way in, which explains each of the guideposts along the way. Learned something new about redwoods!

This trail is very short (½ mile, flat) with LOTS of educational stops along the way. They even have a self guided tour brochure that you can pick up and read as you walk around the trail. This trail is great is you just want to get out and stretch your legs while you walk around some of the oldest and tallest trees in the park. The trail is wide and fenced in in most places, lots of photo opportunities will give you something for the ‘gram

Beautiful trail! If you want to add a few more miles and get a truly beautiful start from views above the trees you will descend, I highly recommend this. It add about 2-3 miles though. I also went all the way to the beach! It was amazing and definitely doable in 2 days.
