The trail was fine, but only one small stretch had a decent view and otherwise it was in the forest. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with it, but there wasn’t anything breathtaking either. If you’ve seen redwoods many times and have hiked a good bit this isn’t a must-do by any stretch. If you haven’t, this trail has a lot of big redwoods and if you start early around sunrise you get the benefit of deer, fox, and no humans.

Amazing day. Beautiful trees, various terrain, very little smoke from nearby fires. Dogwoods changing colors were beautiful and the size of the giant sequoias is breathtaking. Want to correct a previous hikers post: that wasn’t bear poop, it was a cow pie! And many of them! I’m sure you spotted a bear, but those piles were not from it!

Redwood Canyon is a type of hike to select if you want to experience a forest hike. There are no mountain vistas and you are in shade for most of the hike. It is one of the easiest hikes to get to in the park, so it makes an excellent destination for a day hike. The dirt road to the trailhead is an easy drive but is not plowed in winter.

When you come from the parking lot take the trail to the right at the fork, that way you will avoid the major hill on your last two miles. Beautiful hike, with large sequoia groves without the crowds. Highly recommend it! Several stream crossings. The waterfall is ok, much nicer ones in the park. Hiking poles would have made the trail a lot easier, with the elevation changes.
