Red Slate Mountain

Just another breathtaking valley showcasing the beauty of the High Sierras. I’ve lived in Mammoth for 3 years and just got around to exploring this section of trails. It’s hard to wrap your head around how many trails, mountains, and lakes there are to discover.

Did this as an overnight: left in the late afternoon and set up camp at Big Mcgee Lake that evening, summited the next morning then hiked out that afternoon. As of mid July 2018 some of the trail is still impacted by snow. I encourage you to bring poles and get through this section because McGee pass and Red Slate Summit are worth the price of admission; which to be clear is a steady dose of switchbacks, bloodthirsty mosquitos, hot sun, and thin air.
