Phleger Estate is a gorgeous swath of second-growth redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains just west of Silicon Valley. It's a remote section of Golden Gate National Recreation Area that gets few visitors, making it a prime getaway if you need a break from civilization. This route starts on Skyline Boulevard, AKA Highway 35. Parking is free in a smattering of lots on the west side of Highway 35 on the fringe of Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. Best time to go: this is all shaded so it's nice year-round. It will be fairly warm in the summer, but not nearly as hot as it can get in the valley.

Beautiful trail. If you like quiet Redwood trails then this is for you. Basically down 1600 ft.. and back but stunning! Over 6 miles by my All Trails recording.

Just hiked there today. The closed part of the trail has been rerouted to a new one so the loop hike is all good now. Beautiful trail, 90% trail are under shade. The uphill hike when u back to the Lonely trail is a real challenge. Slightly more than 5 miles and took me 3.5 hours to finish. Bring enough water with you. Love this trail!

Down and up!!! It was amazing! 6/5 stars. Beautiful trail. Will be back. Slightly longer than 5 miles :)

After hiking 8 miles, we realized part of the trail was closed at 3/4 point, we had to turn back and hike another 8 miles. We couldn’t make it so we Uber we back. I wish there was a notice at trailhead.

Good trail in a mixed evergreen Forrest. The start of the trail was muddy and there were downed trees on the trail. It's challenging due to large elevation change. I could hear birds and the scent of the pine forrest was unbelievable.

One of my favorite trails on the peninsula, and certainly a hidden gem. Hiked goes through three different gulches filled with redwoods, crossing a creek each time. At least in January all had water. Despite being very accessible from the entire peninsula, hiked on a Saturday and saw 4 other people. I love hikes that feel secluded and this is one of the few that offers that anywhere near SF. I’d add however that the hike took a little over three hours and by my tracker was well over 6 miles, so budget time accordingly. Not sure I’d trust the 5 mile count it says here, and with the elevation gain, the steepest part of which comes close to the very end of the hike, it’s definitely more strenuous than most moderate hikes I’ve found through AT.

Trail starts downhill, so conseeve your energy to fight the uphill battle on return. 98% if the trail is under the shade. The ground is covered by thick layer of pine needles- like walking on carpet.

There’s a couple of entrance for this trail, trail signs inside the park is good, no so good to the exit of the park. I’ll say going down is easy, uphill is harder, beautiful redwoods.

This is definitely not an easy trail. The distance is 7.3 miles, not 5 and the elevation gain is serious. The parking is on the side of the Skyline Boulevard and is quite limited. The forest is great though. There are two benches on the trail.

Enjoyed this hike today. Only two other hikers during the few hours we took. There are some benches at the beginning mile that are a peaceful place to sit for a minute. The creek/river wasn’t really there. Good trail. The return is a workout!

Beautiful hike but definitely not Easy unless we went the wrong way. Trail goes downhill from skyline eastward and after going 3.5 miles downhill and never reaching the loop we turned around and climbed back up. We are in good shape but still a pretty good workout. Maybe the description is only about the loop, not sure.

This is an excellent hiking trail among tall redwoods and an allweather creek.
