Phleger Estate is a gorgeous swath of second-growth redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains just west of Silicon Valley. It's a remote section of Golden Gate National Recreation Area that gets few visitors, making it a prime getaway if you need a break from civilization. This route starts on Skyline Boulevard, AKA Highway 35. Parking is free in a smattering of lots on the west side of Highway 35 on the fringe of Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. Best time to go: this is all shaded so it's nice year-round. It will be fairly warm in the summer, but not nearly as hot as it can get in the valley.

This is definitely not an easy trail. The distance is 7.3 miles, not 5 and the elevation gain is serious. The parking is on the side of the Skyline Boulevard and is quite limited. The forest is great though. There are two benches on the trail.

Enjoyed this hike today. Only two other hikers during the few hours we took. There are some benches at the beginning mile that are a peaceful place to sit for a minute. The creek/river wasn’t really there. Good trail. The return is a workout!

Beautiful hike but definitely not Easy unless we went the wrong way. Trail goes downhill from skyline eastward and after going 3.5 miles downhill and never reaching the loop we turned around and climbed back up. We are in good shape but still a pretty good workout. Maybe the description is only about the loop, not sure.

This is an excellent hiking trail among tall redwoods and an allweather creek.
