An awesome trail that cuts through the inner valleys of the backside hills in Montana de Oro. Moderate elevation gain, and a few areas where footing can get a bit rough (loose dirt), but overall a relatively easy and well-maintained views. Really nice ocean views in the latter portions of the trail!

We started at the Coon Creek Trail and hiked the Rattlesnake Flats Trail up to the ridge and then back down to Coon Creek. After that, we followed the Coon Creek Trail up to its end at the Cypress Grove, then returned via Coon Creek Trail back to the parking lot. The trail is beautiful after the recent heavy winter rains, with lots of wildflowers and plenty of water in Coon Creek. We even saw a few steelhead trout in the creek! Unfortunately, all that rain also means that the grass is very high and encroaches on the trail in many places. Watch out for ticks! I pulled off two of the little buggers after the hike, and that was despite wearing long pants and a long-sleeve shirt.

My friend and I went up the Rattlesnake Flats trail and came down the Coon Creek trail, which makes a really nice 4 mile loop in total, with a moderate beginning and easy middle and end. Beautiful views of the ocean and ravine, lots of lizards, rabbits, birds, and butterflies.
