Start this hike from Juniper Flats and hike west along the rolling California Hiking and Riding Trail with beautiful scenery. Just after mile marker 23 and about 4.6 miles in turn right up and old closed sandy dirt road. From the end of this road follow the worn trail directly to the base of Quail Mountain (5813 ft). When you finally reach the topmost ridgeline hike Northeast across the top to find the first summit register where the big rock cairn had been knocked down. From there about 500 ft more North is the true summit with the benchmark named "JO" and another summit register and rock cairn. You can descend down an easier route on the southeast running ridge.

Great hike! Finding the turnoff was easier than we expected - I have posted a picture for reference. We had some trouble finding the path up the mountain, but generally it was easy enough to find our own way where we lost the trail. Coming down, we ended up further East than expected but made it back to the main trail without too much trouble. Overall, a great hike if you are looking for a little adventure and don't mind losing the path!

Could not find trailhead to Quail Mountain from California Hiking and Riding trail. Bring a GPS and maps because this is unmarked and very hard to find!
