Trail begins as a shady oak grove. Bells are provided for the few mountain bikers. The mildly trafficked trail quickly ascends through the canopy. At 0.7 miles the trail becomes exposed to sun and is rocky and loose. Soon you are at the top scrambling through overgrown chaparral to the final clearing. I didn’t find the bench instead was poked by a Yucca plant. The alternate loop is heavily overgrown and unpassable without leg and arm coverings and a machete. The final pedestrian trail via bog thistle is narrow with a nice bridge and turquoise stone steps.

Really nice, pretty easy, but lots of options to make it as long or short as you’d like.

Great views. Plenty of shades. We stayed on Mariposa Trail all the way, and hiked on paved trail to the dead end. We came to Sterling Lane, which was residential. Mariposa real didn’t loop back the the parking oh Prefumo Canyon Trail head. No snakes. Some lose rocks. Nonetheless l, we enjoyed the trail and had a good walk!

First off, I would recommend bringing hiking poles (I forgot mine). There are a lot of small and medium rocks on the trail, which roll under your feet and were problematic on my way down. I would also recommend wearing hiking boots for ankle stability as you walk over the rocks. The hike itself was absolutely lovely, with great views. I only passed a few hikers and mountain bikers, so most of the time I had the trail completely to myself. I highly recommend the trail.

Great, beautiful trail. Good mix of tree cover and sunshine. On a bike it’s a tough, technical climb... and actually a tough technical descent as well! Definitely not for MTB beginners, but lots of fun. As a hiking or running trail it’s great, just be careful for your ankles as there’s like a million little rocks— the first half mile or so is pretty smooth dirt, then the rocky terrain starts and never ends.

Great hike with wonderful views of SLO and Morro Rock. There is a lot of poison oak towards the bottom where the trail is narrow, so make sure to pay attention and stay on trail.

This an moderate hike and the views are spectacular of the Central Coast and some Pacific Ocean. This hike is well worth doing, best in the spring when everything is blooming and it is not too hot, it was foggy on this particular day over the coast so could not see Morro Bay. This trail has both ticks and Poison oak as hazards if you get too close to the sides or go off trail. Rattlesnakes are very common here and warnings are out for Mountain Lions. Ran into the Laguna Junior High Cross country team towards the end which was a shocker as I had the trail all to myself until I heard them coming! Narrow trail makes that more difficult. Virtual Treadmill video of this hike can be seen on my YouTube Channel, copy and paste link below to watch it. Thanks. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFO02nxPdM4-CabegFIPlow?view_as=subscriber

Easy trail. Bog thistle trail is only moderately steep. Lots of ridge hiking. Cool views of Mt Bishop as well as Madonna. At the top is Morro view with a bench to enjoy the view!

There were no previous comments for this hike so thought I would add one. This was a really pleasant hike although much of the trail is pretty rocky. Nice amount of elevation gain to get some good views of the valley and even out to Morro Rock. It's not as much of a loop as it is an out and back, but that's ok. I was really was not expecting to see wildflowers with how dry it's been, but was pleasantly surprised that there were still quite a few out. Also the cool ocean breeze keeps the temperature very pleasant for hiking. We followed the signs to Morro Rock view and found a nice bench to rest on while enjoying the view before heading back down. The whole hike was just under 4 miles.
