Getting There

Potem Falls is a stunning waterfall. It is narrow at the top and fans out at the bottom as it plunges 69 ft. off a cliff into the Pit River arm of Lake Shasta

Turnout

To get to Potem Falls you need to find an easy to miss road called Fenders Ferry Rd between Round Mountain and Montgomery Creek. After 3.5 miles Fenders Ferry Rd will turn to a well maintained dirt road passable in most passenger cars. You now have 5.7 miles to go to the unmarked trail head. The road is a typical forest service road lots of turns, narrow at times, along a canyon with no guard rail, patchy cell service if any, you know typical forest country. The road will drop down from the canyon wall and a narrow bridge will take you across the Pit arm of Lake Shasta. From the end of the bridge you have 0.6 miles to go. Look for a pull out on the left side of the road. There may have been a sign here at one point but all I found was a small metal post on a block of concrete.

Head before 2pm there’s limited parking on the side of the road. Make a right onto Ferry Rd and after 5 miles the road will be unpaved for another 4.5.

Great trail, easy to find. Beautiful waterfall, swimming hole and rope swing. Plus it looked like there are some good areas to explore down stream too. We will be back for sure. Go early though because it does get busy and most aholes don’t keep their distance.

Trail is easy and The waterfall is BEAUTIFUL. However ....it was VERY crowded, difficult to find parking, and too many people that don’t respect nature there. Leaving their food, trash, and belongings all over. I saw so much garbage on the trail, and once we got to the bottom/falls, there were so many people w picnic items - Tupperware full of food, coolers, bottles... and many people did not clean up after themselves. What a shame. If you decide to check it out, go mid week early in the day. Don’t even bother going on a weekend.

Unsafe location! This is a beautiful waterfall with a really pretty swimming hole, but as I was leaving I encountered some sketchy folks who I’m pretty sure had just busted in the window of another car in the parking lot. When I walked back up to the parking area one guy said that he saw who did it and he was going to try to go after them, but then he pulled his truck behind Mycar so that I wasn’t able to leave right away. On my way out he was pulled on the side of the road with another person, so it felt to me like some sort of smash and grab operation that they have running there.

This was my favorite waterfall I’ve ever seen. So beautiful and secluded. Heads up it’s about 20-30 down a dirt road. Not that well marked. There’s a rock that says waterfall but it’s facing the opposite direction. Very steep climb but so worth it. You can swim in the water around the waterfall afterwards or relax in the creek.

Fun, easy hike. Loved the switchbacks and cliffs. Water was very cold today but still a few people in. Absolutely beautiful, can't wait to go back when it's hot.

When you get to the area that looks like the trail splits in four ways, go to the far left. Please. I did not and slid on my butt practically the whole way down. When I got to the end, I saw a family with their dogs, and was amazed. They then pointed to the actual easy trail to go back up. *face palm* picture of the correct direction in the photos with red x’s and the green arrow! Beautiful falls, watch out for rattle snakes. One shook his little tail feather at me and scared me to death. But worth it overall!

Directions/Getting there: If you have GPS, it’s very straight forward! Once you get closer, there is a dirt road. It took me about 30 minutes going 20mph. (Hence why some people say it’s a long drive) Trail: very easy trail! Some stated that it’s VERY steep and slippery, and yes some parts are if you take the short cut ways. The All Trails App shows the short cut ways to the falls that are very steep. But if you continue straight after the first bend of the trail (instead of going down the steep part leading down) , its much much easier and does lead down to the falls! I’ll post pictures for reference. The trail starts right near the wood sign! Falls: very gorgeous spot to spend the day! I got to the falls around noon and a couple people were there. Very rocky area and rocks can be slippery, so watch your step! Spent a couple hours there and around 2:30-3pm it got very crowded! Enjoy!

worth the drive. You get to the falls rather quickly, on a narrow switchback trail. Some parts of the trail were rather narrow, or a bit Rocky, but not at all difficult to maneuver. the pool down by the falls has a nice shallow area to walk around in, and get your feet wet. The water when I went was ice cold, but a few brave souls ventured in, for a light swim. My group arrived just before noon, and had the spot pretty much to ourselves, then the people started rolling in. Nice little hike, with a perfect reward at the end.

We went out to see this beautiful place and its quite a drive out there but worth it. if dirt roads along sheer drops bother you....don' t go. if you are a "mature" hiker it may not be easy for you. the trail zig-zags down a very steep mountainside.....don't trip!!! We are in our 60's and we could not attempt this trail. It's quite a drop in elevation and a steep hike out...no level spots. But a few years back I would not have hesitated. If you are in good shape go for it!

The trail was very nice. You have to drive on an unpaved road for about 30 minutes but it worth it. The hike itself is not bad at all. The waterfall is beautiful

takes longer to drive to the trailhead than it does to like down and back, but its well worth the drive. I wouldn't recommend this trail for anyone with knee or leg problems though as it is a fairly steep trail. A person not in the best of physical shape could easily do this hike in 30 min. round trip. Really fun little hike, with swimming at the end!

Narrow trail with rocky areas with steep cliff on one side. Fine for young kids IF they will pay attention when traversing the trail. We took 13 kids ages 3-15 down there. All did fine. Not a lot of area to set your stuff or picnic but we just grabbed a small area in the rocks to place our items. There is a rope swing that our older kids swung off of. Great swimming area with pebbles on bottom. Awesome plants that grow near the cold water. And of course the Falls are beautiful. Parking is just a wide area in the road.

Beautiful falls and creek setting. The water was high, according to some locals, and the usual "beach" area had water over it, but it was a great place for me and my kids to escape for an afternoon. Very busy... not sure if from holiday weekend or social media exposure. The trail was well maintained but narrow with steep drop offs in some spots. For me it was fine, but my kids (8 & 10) felt a little nervous in some spots. Watch out for poison oak, it was everywhere right along the trail. Dirt road is well maintained. Parking might get tricky at trailhead if you go later in the day. Zero cell reception up there.

Absolutely gorgeous. You drive on a maintained dirt road and no sign for the falls. Short walk down to them. We got lucky and saw a bald eagle flying around the falls. Can't get anymore serene and majestic than that. Falls are definitely worth the time to see.
