Potato Mountain from Claremont Wilderness Park is a 9 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Claremont, California that offers scenic views and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from April until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Moderate trail, with a steady incline for most of the time. The Claremont Loop section tends to be crowded, but once you're on the Potato Mtn trail, you're pretty much by yourself. Don't forget your potato!
Excellent views the entire hike! Can see the larger snow capped mountains to the north, and all the way to palos verdes and Malibu in the other direction. This hike would be brutal in the summer but was very pleasant in the winter. Bring lots of water and check the snow line!
This route is shorter and more direct than the route from Sycamore Canyon and is all on fire roads. The hike is popular and crowded throughout the hike. There a signs warning of a $100 fine for not wearing a mask, but mask usage is still spotty. Parking costs $5 weekdays and $7 on weekends with a 4 hour limit.
Well marked and maintained, wide fire road with some rocky areas. A little crowded in a Sunday mid-morning.
Great hike before the rains. 1.5 miles up the Claremont loop, and then veer off to the right and then about 4 miles or so to the peak. I don’t really like to hike along big wide fire roads, but still a good hike. Only a few spots with shade, so bring water or hike early. But the views at the end were really nice. And don’t forget to bring your potato!
Really fun, lots of climb but good variety of steeps vs. breathers. I added a few miles beyond the recording, parking free by Higginbotham Park and taking the Thompson Creek trail up to this trailhead.
Awesome work out. Small mountain with steepness most of the way up on a well maintained dirt road. The last .7 Miles, gets rocky but very doable. Heads up. Parking has a fee that covers 4 hours only. Make sure you go up to the mountain, relax quick, take pictures of great views, and go back before meter runs out. Almost 4.5 Miles up-- 4.5 Miles down. About 9 miles roundtrip from Fee parking lot. Don't forget to take your Potato.
Such a great trail! On a fire road, if you don’t mind those. But it takes you into the mountains and has some incredible views, for only being a 3k’ high peak. However, make it back before 5- they close the gates at sundown. We were 30 minutes late getting down but the cop was extremely gracious and didn’t give us a ticket. A great trail that’s not too difficult. Would definitely come back multiple times
The trail is well maintained and a bit rocky on the stretch to the Potato summit.
